Cold Start Resolution!!!

I have had the same problem as many of you when the temp dips below about 50. So after rejetting a hundred times, checking everything in the carbs, airbox and intake I could think of, I finally took it to the dealer.
Jetting had no effect on the results, 3 different pilots and .5 to 4 turns made no difference.
They told me that a vent hose had a kink/obstruction that they replaced, and the red coating/liner in the tank was deteriorated and clogging the fuel valve and the carbs. The cleaned everything and rebuilt the fuel valve.
Each time I reassembled my bike it would start right up, but when I let it stay out in the cold, no dice.
Today the bike stayed out all day, and started up with the choke on and smooth idled. Then again tonight. I'm keeping a close eye on it, though.
The guy at the shop said it was the second one he saw in a few weeks.

johnny,

For what it's worth, my tech said it is helpful to add another high flow fuel filter so I put in a Visu filter.

http://pitposse.stores.yahoo.net/visufuelfilter.html

I'll change it out about every 10,000 miles or so.

How are you starting it in cold weather? On mine, I only give it gas on starts once the bike is already warmed up, but only after hitting the start button for a second first. So when it's cold, I hit the start button and it cranks for about 3 seconds. Then release the start, repeat, release, and on about the 3rd or 4th crank it starts and idles slow at first then picks up.

When the weather is 60 degrees plus, it starts right up first time.

So what is your method?

Well, during this I never really developed a method. I tried almost everything though. Yesterday, I just pulled out the choke, didn't touch the throttle, and held the button. She started up the way she should, needed choke for a minute or so.

Glad you found success!
I added this filter to my America, replacing the hidden, in-line filter. So far, no gas issues. $2 at my local Yamaha/Honda dealer.

Yep same problem here.Pulled off the petrol cock and the filter was covered in redish/brown particles that look suspisiously like the tank interior coating and once again the fuel bowls were full of the same crud.Gave everything a good spray and clean with carb. cleaner and reassembled.Hopefully this wayward coating isn t going to be an ongoing problem.

Yeah, I want to make sure I don't need a new tank, but I'll give them a chance.
