Riding Safe
Don't know if this is the right place for this thread, but I'm sure the Preacher Man will soon let us know if it ain't. & it can get moved if needs be.
I went riding with my car keys in my pocket the other day, & it nearly ruined the ride. They just wouldn't stop working their way around in my pocket, so that the key's blade was poking into my groin (sorry about any mental images conjured up here). But it really played on my mind, as I thought about the consequences of body meeting bitumin, in those circumstances (i.e bleeding to death within 4 heartbeats). I eventually had to stop & move the keys to my jacket pocket, just so I could enjoy the ride.
But it got me thinking about the many more safety risks that we bikers face, which we often ignore or don't even think about, until it bites us.
Anybody else got any unusual safety issues that we should be aware of.

Not so much safety here, but I cant count how much $$ I have lost oughta shallow pockets ridin! Thank god no keys lost . I got the bar bag so I put most in there now. Gotta remember to take it out (wallet #1) tho! Know whayt you mean tho.

Good point. I remember reading several years ago after a guy wrecked, he attributed a couple of broken ribs to the fact that he had his wallet stuffed into an inside jacket pocket at chest level. He landed on the wallet, which in turn pushed hard enough on his rib cage to take out a few of them.

Yeah, here's a safety tip from dofus me a few weeks ago.
I'm going down the road and I pushed in my choke like I've done a million times. But this time my leather glove got pinched in the choke and I could not pull it out to save my life. I'm yanking and yanking trying to get my left hand free before I reach the approaching stop sign. Finally it pulled out.
So watch out for biting choke buttons.

My first pavement surfing misadventure was compounded by keys in my front left pocket. I had chaps on and they and my jacket saved me plenty of skin but the bruise I got on my hip looked like Nolan Ryan tagged me with a fast ball. The keys did not rip through the pocket but jammed into me hard enough with the pocket fabric around them to actually break the skin in a couple places. now I try to put my stuff elsewhere.

I never wear boots with laces because of catching them on the pedals, but lately I was thinking of a pair of lace-ups. So I was walking the bike from one end of the garage to the other yesterday wearing tennis shoes and darned if I didn't catch those laces on my gear shift lever not once but TWICE while putting my foot down. Apparently someone knew what they were talking about.

That shoestring thing reminded me of something that happened to me once. Back in the '70's I rode a BMW,and like just about everyone else,I wore flare leg pants(That's trousers,by the way,for you Brits  ).About the second or third time I rode the bike,I came up to a stop and went to put my foot down,only to discover that my pants leg was draped over the carb top.Too far over to shift my weight the other way,down we went. The only damage done was to my dignity,but henceforth,whenever riding that bike,I always tucked my pant legs into my boots.

Safety hazards: Good looking women. Remember to let them ogle you and the Bonnie. You do not want to hit the cage in front (that just stopped), because you turn your head to look at some buxom babe you just passed.

Good points everyone. But many of them fall into the "forgot to engage brain" catagory. & posing always presents its own problems. I remember following a guy on a new BMW K1200 along the strip into Pt. Douglas, when a barely bikini'd beach babe caught his eye. & he went straight through a roundabout & into a palm tree. It didn't phase him though. "Did you see that chick?" was the first thing he said when I got to him (she was a stunner) "Yeah, but was she worth doing that to your bike though?" I asked him, & pointed to the sad remains of his Beemer. I could tell by his crestfallen look that she wasn't. I'd love to have seen his insurance claim.
& while we're admitting to acts of foolishness. Has anybody else trapped their foot under their sidestand, when trying to lower it, whilst still sitting on the bike? I did it on a Yamaha XJ 900 I once had. & quickly found out just how hard it is to lift a heavy bike like that off your foot, when all your own wejght is working against you. It took me nearly 10 minutes to get it off. & the bruising took weeks to subside. That's why I always get off the bike to lower my sidestand these days.
Well, what do you know? I guess age really does bring wisdom (eventually). Keep them safety tips rolling in.
