Fall Color

I'm a little surprised no one had posted a fall color thread. Were seriously headed into the peak color period in the very northern Minnesota and Wisconsin areas. Our color will be done by October 5th or so. Color will be somewhat muted immediately around Lake Superior in Mn and Wi due to the extremely dry conditions this summer. Riding I35 home yesterday from central Mn all the way to Cloquet, its looking very good. The short term weather forecast for this northern area this weekend is sunny with temps in the high 70's, I think thats pretty good for m/c riding. I would be curious as to the peak color periods for areas south of me.

Hi, Dec: think it is because most of us south of you and not in the mountains have some time to go before the color is upon us. Its still green around here. Our colors usually peak in the second or third week of October.

Dec

I'll be up north of Rice Lake this weekend on an annual outing with a group of buddies, playing golf and discussing our Investment Club holdings.
And a beer or two as well.

I'll check out the hues as I search for wayward tee shots in the woods!

You'd better play 36 in both the AM and PM; you guys are fast running out of great divot days.

I guess this doesn't count as a Autumn-colour report, then.

Golfer, Monte's got a really good point. I was in the Cities Monday evening and I didn't put it on a stop watch but you have 20 more minutes of daylight on the PM side than we do. We gotta be on a par with southern Norway for loss of day in the fall. And TB I would imagine you have pretty nice fall color. I do want to know when a good weekend would be to go down the Mississippi for the colors.

Monte-

Daylight does become a problem as we head into later October.
I actually play until we get snow that sticks and/or the greens freeze. 35 degrees is no problem for me, especially with my trusty hip flask!
3 out of the last 4 years we've actually been able to play right up until Thanksgiving. But we have to be heading up the last hole by about 4:30 or so.
Amazing, when I was a kid we used to play pond ice hockey in late November- guess there is something to this global climate change.

Dec- Somewhere between the 5th and 15th of October should be prime for running the river. The Wisconsin side seems far nicer to me than the Minnesota side.

Fall colors

Does anyone know the answer to this? Does a dry summer produce a more colorful Fall or a less colorful one?

Colors are influenced by the sugars in the leaves. A totally dry summer will result in little late season sap and little sugar in it and little color. A very wet summer will result in dilute sap, and little sugar, and little color. A long period of relatively hot moist days will bring up the sugars and, if followed by a cold snap to "set" the sugars, will yield good color. Like Goldilocks, it has to be "just right" to have sap with concentrated sugars to produce the most brilliant colors.

I have lived in areas, like the one I am living in now, where the variety of trees produce very nice colors. Ironically, however, only once in my life was I overwhelmed with the beauty of a glistening and irridescent sensory overload of colors, colors so brilliant that it looked like someone painted way to much color onto a canvas. It literally did not look real. Was it here? In the mountains? New England? No. It was October, 1994 riding on a little state road that follows the river from Peoria to Ottawa Illinois for about 45 miles. Nowhere else on that flat corn belt stretch was there more than a hint of color. But down in that narrow river valley, maybe 100' below the table top flat land that covers mile after mile of north central Illinois, the rainbow ran amuck. NEVER had I seen anything like it, and never again anywhere. Obviously, Sue and I went back the next year, same time, same road, same time of day, etc. It was totally ordinary.

An amazing glimpse of heaven..........
