Centerstand (scrambler) opinions

I installed the factory centerstand yesterday. It's an easy install, and useful for removing the rear wheel.

Unfortunately the springs are pretty week and the thing bounces around over small bumps (in particular the little raised lane markers that we have here in cali). I'm thinking a zip tie to secure it, but am open to any other opinions.

The passenger peg sits right above the centerstand lever making it hard to mount the bike while straddling it - the only way I could get the bike on it was to dismount the bike and pull it up on the stand while standing next to the bike.

The springs are weak, I dont know what can be done except replace them with stronger ones.
AFAIK, standing next to the bike is the proper way to get it on the stand. Straddling and putting it on the stand is for scooters

My legs would have to be about 4" longer if I was going to try to put mine on the cenrestand while straddling.I don't believe I have ever seen anyone do it.Interesting.

I can hear mine clunk back up against its stop when riding off a curb,or coming down from a wheelie. I haven't taken mine off road since I installed it about two weeks ago.Makes me wonder if it might cause problems on a bumpy,or washboard trail. I'm going to look for a stiffer spring,or see if I can fit a second one. I'll let you know what I come up with.

Center Stands

A good bike jack is cheaper & more usefull!! Ahh to ea his own. When they came std on bikes years ago- they were ok. I wouldnt pay t oput one on now. A wire tie sounds like a "_ rig" Gotta be something that will keep it up & look like it belongs??

I put one on and I hate it! It rattles all the time. It's also hairy-butt ugly. The spring is just too weak, but if it was stronger, the average home garage mechanic couldn't get it hooked up. What to do, what to do? I'm thinking about getting a bike stand and ditching the centerstand. Did I mention that I hate it?

After I get done with my divorce and my move, I'll probably take care of it.

Center stand spring strength

Hi,
I have an '05 T100 Bonnie. The centerstand I bought from the Triumph dealer came with two springs of the same length, one larger than the other on the outside diameter. I wondered why. I hooked up one of them and realized why. It exhibited the same symptoms as you are describing. So I slipped the second spring inside of the first and hooked it up too. With both springs in place it acts as it should. A loose stand could be dangerous I suppose though it may just drag the ground at times. It should spring up and stay up. The Bonnie likes it that way :)
I'd try to supplement your existing spring or get a stronger one.

Good luck

I have hooked both springs up (one was inside the other to begin with). I believe it is too weak, especially if I can hook it up with no problems.

The issue is that the centerstand rattles against it's stop. It also moves off its stop when I hit big bumps.

I looked at using a zip tie to hold it up against the frame, but there isn't really anywhere to attach it to (the swing arm moves independently of the centerstand so I can't attach it to that).

I'll probably put some rubber dampers on the stops and look into stronger spring. Although the whole set up with the C bar and outboard spring attachment are a bit hokey and may not like a stronger spring.

A bike stand is useful, and I have a friends that I can use. However I don't want one more (rather large) item to lug around. It's bad enough with car jacks, jack stands, engine hoists, etc, etc... :)

Centrestand alternatives

Although I do have a lift for the bikes, I find that one of the advantages of the scrambler with it's higher pipes is that it's easy to use a paddock stand on the rear wheel for chain maintainance etc.

Yeah I can't decide whether to ditch mine or not. It's ugly, it rattles & it almost caused me to crash once, when it came down & hit the road, when I was getting a little air in the dirt; pole-vaulting the bike forward! (not nice) But it's so useful for working on the back wheel, oiling & tensioning the chain, & an added bonus for me is that I can easilly squeeze the bike into my little parking bay, along with my car. & personally, I like the look of a bike on its centre-stand, which is why I shelled out for it in the first place. Like I said, I can't decide. Though I do now make sure that it's wired up to the pillion peg frame, if I know that I'm going somewhere that might get me airborne. But I don't keep it wired up all the time, as I use it heaps, & it's too annoying.
I never thought about fitting stronger springs, but as the originals were hard enough to fit, I think I'd prefer to ditch it than go through that again

Had Dealer install optional centerstand

I bought last years model, new. It came with $1000 worth of Triumph accessories. I got the Tach, competition exhaust, center stand, and the retro paddock jacket.

The only thing I'm unhappy with is the centerstand. There's some play from side to side, and I have to slide it away from the chain. There's a spot on the stop where the stand meets the frame where I'm tempted to gorilla glue some rubber strips to lower the stand an eighth or a quarter inch, and reduce the rattling.

I'll post photos after I do this. Otherwise, I'm pretty pleased with my Scrambler ;). I've managed to drag the pegs twice, riding with some Ducati riders, and have taken it down a muddy mountain road. People back east would probably call it a 4 wheel drive road. Out here normal.
