Hi all,
I am thinking of replacing the mudguards on my 2008 bonneville.
I would like to swap the rear one for a shorter version. Perhaps i could use the one of Thruxton or Newchurch models or what else would you have to suggest?
As for the front one, what alternatives i have apart from the trhuxton's mudguard?
Remove current fenders. Measure and mark the length/shape you want. Tape off and break out the Dremel tool. Use a file to smooth new edge and paint with touch up paint of the same color. Bobs your uncle.
Since the rear fender mounting is real simple I've always thought you could use just about any traditional style fender, like a generic replacement for the '60s triumphs for example. As long as the width is correct just cut it to length and drill mounting holes, maybe use some thick rubber washers to account for any fender curvature vs the stock flat mounting.
That's not as simple as it appears, as you point out the stock mudguard isn't a complete curve and on most alternatives I've seen that are fully curved when you add spacers to get the rear section to sit right in relation to the curve of the wheel the section towards the engine sits out of line with the stock plastic mudguard section and IMO never looks right. I've only ever seen one that looked right where the owner had modified the generic mudguard to make it blend nicely into the stock plastic section.
So far the best option seems to be to shorten a stock mudguard, use a PJ Glassfibre mudguard or remove the mudguard completely and fit a fender eliminator.
Scrambler and Thruxton rears are the same and are interchangable with your stock fender. As for the front, I'm using a Thruxton, which also is the same as a Scrambler.
PJ Glassfibre do a nice shorter rear fender that still has the correct fitting, holes etc for the bonnie. I just fitted one, looks great, you just need to drill holes for the light, license plate etc.
The PJ Glassfibre bobbed mudguards are nice. But if you are patient and don't mind never going back, trimming it up with a dremel isn't hard to do.
