Hawk asked me to post this for him.
“Cyn” has been using an expression from an old Grateful Dead Song to describe some of the happenings on the road to and from Cambria, “What a long strange trip it’s been”.
Nothing could be truer. Sometimes random events have a way of defining and shaping our actions and our place in time.
Please bear with me, for a moment here. The organizing group Brian, Chris, Robin and I have decided not to give the donation money to the “Make a Wish Foundation”, I won’t explain the road that effort took instead I’ll tell you why.
Some of you may know that last year a very good “lifelong” friend of mine passed away, it happened on 7/30, exactly a week before Cambria 06, he had been diagnosed with Leukemia almost a year prior, after a painstaking search they found a donor, but he was too weak for the transplant and on Tues the 25th he checked into the hospital with a “minor” fever, Friday night he was given 48 hours to live and died peacefully Sunday morning in a Los Angles area hospital. We donated the proceeds from last years raffle in his name to the Leukemia Society.
Last Sunday morning, after things had died down abit, Chris, Brian and I went to Breakfast with some others, as I passed the Palms office I grabbed one of the newspapers stacked by the door and stuck it under my arm. At breakfast I was scanning the front page, Bob (Boboso) made a crack about a pig being on the “Front Page” of the San Luis newspaper. I was interested because several weeks before on the pre-ride Malcolm and I joined Chris while he fed the pig that his daughter Sami was raising for the same Fair as the one mentioned in the article. There was a lot of good natured ribbing and meaningful conversation regarding pig farming (trust me I jest not).
As I read on a light bulb flashed immediately, heres the story. It’s about 14 year old Brittany and her quest to help her 11 year old friend Baily, and the utter disappointment from her quest to raise money for her friend with Lymphocytic Leukemia. Please take the time to read this short article.

I sat across the Breakfast table from Brian and Chris and I said “This is it”!, both of them “teared up”, CCRider was at the far end of the table and should have been listening to Matt Capri talking at the other end, but when I glanced in his direction, he was transfixed on our conversation and nodded his head.
I don’t take any “credit” for this, in hindsight I feel that I was being “used” and directed by a friend I miss very much, Steve McKay Boughton. Steve was a better man then I will ever be, so it is with his heart and his smile that I dedicate at least my “effort”.
We appreciate the donations that were made and the enthusiasm in which they were made, the raffle prizes were top notch and we thank our sponsors. We will be presenting the raffle proceeds of over $1000.00 to Brittany Detrick and her family next Friday, Brian, Chris and I will do this in the name of all of you who attended this great event. I am not asking for any more donations here, but if you find it in you heart and wallet, please send anything you can in the name of the NTBF, the Presidents, the Ton Up or BIR Clubs.
Those that attended “Cambria 07” know that we shared something “special”, we want to make it more special with this meaningful donation to someone that is local and in need. The sound of the bikes has faded from the streets of Cambria, please help the sound of this 11 year old’s heart continue to “sound off” for many years to come.
Respectfully
Phil “Hawk” Hawkins
