Yesterday I was riding. If I hit the gas from the mid-range of the rpm (around 4000 or somewhat higher), the engine would race a bit without delivering power to the wheel. Shortly thereafter, the rpm would drop back to what would be normal and power would reach the wheel.

Too little clutch lever free play? I replaced my levers a while back, but have not noticed this issue until yesterday.

thanks in advance,

John

sure does sound like clutch slippage. general rule of thumb, look for about a dimes worth of freeplay at the clutch lever. if you have that, and the clutch engages about where it should at the lever, you may have to look into the clutch itself, or maybe the springs are weak
unless you recently changed to a different oil, that the clutch doesnt like

According to the workshop manual your clutch cable free play should be 2-3mm at the lever (don't know how that compares with a "dimes worth"!). I would agree with what Geoff said, particularly if you're using an automotive oil with friction modifiers that don't agree with the wet clutch. The clutches on these bikes seem to be pretty robust so you would have had to have gone some to wear out the clutch on an 05 bike, unless you've put a turbo on it!
