Got the parts back from the machine shop today. South Austin Machine did a beautiful job of the work, and even gave me a little tour while cutting the head to fit the new valves. It was cool watching them do the work. Actually, I had more fun watching the dude cut my head than I can remember having that time my folks took me to Disneyland.

The hell with boring details and half witted anecdotes, here are the pics!

Here's the before of the head with stock valves:

After, with 2mm larger intake and 1mm larger exhaust valves:

Here's the before of the intake before port/polish:

and after port/polish (no more burrs, bumps, or rough spots!):

And here's the bored out jugs with the new Wiseco liners pressed in and honed:

Here's another view of the new bores:

I'm going to send the head off to another shop to fit speed triple valve springs to help prevent valve float and raise the redline. I don't plan on running above the stock rev limiter at the moment, but if I get some cams at a later date and/or raise the rev limiter the springs will already be there. I'm going to install the heavy duty clutch springs, and drop in the new pistons and cylinders this week, maybe this weekend. That way when the head comes back I'm all ready for it!

Once again, if anyone is in the Austin area I'd really recommend South Austin Machine. Nice guys, they know what they're doing, and the pricing is good too! In case anyone is wondering all this machine work cost just under $500 (not including the cost of the valves or the Wiseco kit).

I'm going to run the stock carbs for a while, at least a month or 2. Long enough to break it in and get a dyno run or 2 in.

After I do the SV650 front end swap I'm going to buy 36mm mikuni flatslides and make my own "kit". I know BP's HSR41 kit is the bomb, but after the motor work, SV650 parts, etc my funds are tapped! I figure I can build my own carb kit for under $500, I can always by the BP 41mm kit later.

After fitting the 36mm mikunis I'll do another dyno run to see what gains have been made.

Very nice....no way are you getting any quality sleep. :-D

Difficult from the photo to tell how much port work they actually did regarding reshaping/enlargening. You can definately see that the burr's are no longer present though.

Those valve's are huge..( intake )...almost disproportionate, my first thought when I seen the photo was I can see why 1+mm valves give better performance..( I recall Bill stating that )...

...don't take that the wrong way man, your stuff look's sweet. Have fun this weekend getting started on the reassembly.

...really wish I woulda done the valve's when I had it apart.

Dood, your bike has 36mm carbs stock. Buy 42mm carbs and make your own rig man, to this point you havent 1/2 measured anything....don't settle for less with the carbs.

...wait and buy the 42mm's

'trim, here's my thoughts on the carbs

41mms are huge, I'm sure you love yours and I'm sure they work well.

36mms are the same size as stock, yes, but flatslides and CV carbs are totally different.

Also, smaller diameter carbs will have more vacuum at any given RPM than larger ones. If you don't believe me go get a regular straw and a 12'' length of garden hose and a smoothie, see which one works better.

$400 vs $1500...duh!

I was looking at my intake manifolds and they could probably have a lot of extra material TIG'd onto the outer edge (where the carb goes) then the center machined out to allow for a bigger carb at minimal cost. At this point I'm going to try the 36mm flatslides and do a dyno run and see what happens. It may work well, it may work Fing well, but I know it'll help a lot. How much, we'll see. From talking to Dinqua the 36mm flatslide mod will be pretty easy.

you dont have to spend 1500 bucks on carbs, your gonna build your own setup anyway, why not just buy the 42mm's and build your own rig..?

I wish ya nothin but the best with this, and from the photo's I've seen your bigger than me....

...don't make me drive to texas to knock a knot in yer head....I remember how to get there
