I just purchased a 2005 (new - leftover) Honda ST1300. This is my first experience with this manufacturer, since all other sport tourers I've owned have been Beemers. I was pleasantly surprised to find the following statement as I was going thru the Owners Manual.

"Your warranty coverage will not be voided if you choose to perform your own maintenance. However, you should have the proper tools and service information and be mechanically qualified. Failures that occur due directly to improper maintenance are not covered".

Short, simple, to the point.

That "mechanically qualified" thing is quite a loophole. lol :-D

Agreed about the loophole, Kevin. However, I think they're saying 'go ahead and do your own work .... but cause no harm, because if you do, Honda won't pay for your screwup'. I can live with that. Hopefully, the bulk of my work will be oil, filter, spark plug changes on this big red truck of a bike!

The dealer is just trying to stay open and get some service work. That's a good thing. I don't mind getting top end adjustments and the like done at the dealer. As long as they are open, I'll get any work I can to them. Some stuff, like changing tires, is just too much of a drag to do at home. Saves money on special tools in the long run. If and when my dealer dires up, I'll be ready to do it myself.

Brooksie - I agree with you in lots of areas. I have a BMW dealer that is 60-70 miles from my house. There is a boutique dealer 10 minutes from my house. I ride to the dealer 60-70 miles away. They do excellent service work, both mechanics ride BMWs, the owner rides BMWs. They love the bikes and they know them inside out. I don't mind giving them the business when it comes to mechanical work I just don't want to deal with. They are fair, and it is easy to say 'that is good value for what I'm paying'. I often tip the mechanic when he's through.

The shops I have problems with are the ones that want $400.00 for what adds up to an oil and filter change, and an inspection of clutch cable free play, check valve clearance, do a headlight alignment, check my brake pads .... you know the drill .... $400 for an hour's worth of work they're paying the mechanic $20 to do. Gross profit: $380.00.

Those guys don't get my money. I'd rather do it myself.
