FYI Triumphrat.net does not belong to Triumph or the "official" RAT. It is independent of Triumph and not affiliated with it, other than by being a forum for owners of Triumph motorcycles. Having said that, I generally agree with the sentiments expressed here and in other threads about the recent outbreak of censorship, as opposed to moderation.

Over on the "New Triumph Bonneville" forum they seem to manage to delete offending posts from threads without locking or deleting the whole thread. I would have thought healthy discussion of products and suppliers was one of the main functions of a forum such as this. After all, the supplier has right of reply (and often uses it) if they wish to put their side of the argument. I, also, hadn't previously seen the Alanis Morissette business, and if repetition is a crime, then this forum will soon die. No more oil, wide rear tyre, suspension upgrades, etc, etc...

In my opinion, the many recent posts concerning New Bonneville have turned into personal correspondence between disgruntled customers and a RatNet advertiser.

While we do want to keep the forum open to discussions of various vendors, it seemed to me that people were trying to unfairly force private business transactions into a public arena to their own benefit.

It also became apparent that many members felt sarcasm was an appropriate response to people's complaints. That said to me that the post was no longer productive.

Please feel free to bring this up to Shawn if you feel the deletion was unwarranted.

See the other post for more discussion of Alanis.

Also reiterating: TriumphRat.net is not part of your R.A.T. membership - it is independently owned, and operated by volunteers. Your hosts are Shawn L Reed and Mick McGuire.

IMO - coming from someone who owns/operates a simular forum to this one (automotive related), you do NOT have rights here. Offer your opinion - yeah - but if the admins (and their mods) do agree with it or remove it .. then deal with it. It absolutely amazes me when poeple on internet forums think once they have registered a screen name and email account - now they have RIGHTS! Flipping hilarious.

IOW - get your panties out of your crack and enjoy your bike and the ability to have a place dedicated to sharing tech/stories relating to it with people around the world.

That's completely unnecessary. The poster had an opinion and was completely respectful in his posts. Maybe the mods could edit/delete rude responses, such as your own.

If your purpose for owning/operating a forum is to have the power to play God/dictator then that may not be a forum many people are willing to be members of. (Wouldn't be much of a forum without members.)
But if the forum host treats the membership with respect and limits the censorship the members can benefit from a truly informative and entertaining service. A forum like that, where people feel they are members and not merely guests, will be alot more attractive than the former.
I'm just saying.

Just a quicl point (as I have not read this whole threaD) but as a moderator over at bonnevilleamerica.com (and former moderator of THIS forum) we get the cencorship card drawn on us often. The thing is this isn't the free press, so that doesn't really count. It may be a free site, but you are still being invited to participate, ya know? If you come into my house and light up a smoke, I have every right to tell you to put it out. Or if you start mouthing off, I can tell you to shut it or kick you out. Same idea.

That being said, I usually like to give some sort of reason for using the hammer of smiting

Here, here! Unless someone is being offensive, they have as much right to express their opinion as anyone else. The only person being offensive here is "Bonafide". If we are all expected to tow some party line then the forum ceases to be a forum and will die. FYI, "Bonafide", the definition of a "forum" is a place for open discussion and debate, not a dictatorship. Moreover, an internet forum such as this bears no relationship whatsoever to an individuals home, it is a public place.

Let's start off with the official info:

The TriumphRat.Net Acceptable Use Policy and TriumphRat.Net Privacy Statement are linked at the bottom menu bar of any page on the TriumphRat.Net Portal.

The "loosely written" history of this site is on the TriumphRat.Net Wiki:

http://wiki.triumphrat.net/HistoryOfTriumphRatNet

Regardless of if you actually read this info, let's just say that the proper thing to do is exercise some common sense and respond with standard questions; instead of assuming that you are already aware of the facts. In other words, when topics are created with well-thought-out posts; they become sources of mixed reactions once someone comes along and posts information that the original poster wasn't aware of.

Which is what is happening in this situation. Someone started off with good intentions that made a good point, but as soon as someone posted the actual facts - the topic became something else.

As a result, I've removed all topics that were referred to by this. In situations like this, it's best to just "wipe the slate clean".

The TriumphRat.Net Moderator Team isn't a group of engineered robots, they are folks like you with diverse personalities and approaches to complex issues; and donate their time in doing so (none of us are employees of Triumph). They would all prefer to not have to moderate anything, just have fun and yak about their respective favorite Triumph with peers.

If you feel that some of the other's comments are a bit intense, it is understandable but a normal part of any long-term community involvement. Ask some of the older members how they deal with the issue and still make friends.

Hope this helps.
