Saturday morning at oh-dark-thirty, we head for Texas to pick up my newly restored 1968 Trophy TR6R. I can't wait to fire her up and ride her. We're going to do some riding in the Texas Hill Country. See y'all next weekend.

Ah, Carl, nice to know that you are getting to get away for a while too. I'm drooling over your Trophy. Had a '67 in '69 along with my '68 Bonnie. Nice bike. Would really like to see pics when you can.

Be safe on your trip and we'll see you on the internet when we all get back.

'Headed for Texas' sounds like a film title to me, and also it sounds flipping exotic!
Obviously Triang you have not been to Texas. I've been to Texas and liked it fine, but exotic it ain't. Ya know, Dubya's from Texas, maybe that explains it. Maybe not.

As for Sussex, to an American who hasn't been to Europe it sounds kind of exotic.

Hey hey hey! Easy! Just cause Dubya's from Texas don't mean nothin!

Lemme tell you about Texas. Austin and central Texas is amazing, Austin is THE coolest city in Texas. Great nightlife, great scenery, it rarely rains, low crime, good rides everywhere. And then there's the rest of Texas, it's a wasteland. Dallas-sucks Houston-sucks San Antonio -sucks but the Alamo and Riverwalk are cool, everywhere else pretty much sucks too.

Oh and Texas rules. but think of Austin as a mecca in the middle of a dusty hot wasteland. And man is it hot right now, 104 today...

Wow, what a load. I grew up in Houston, went to school at UT in Austin (7 year plan), lived in San Antonio for 7 years as well. I live in D/FW at the moment. All the cities mentioned have their good points and bad. Austin is great if you are a motorcyclist, frat boy, gay, or a tree hugger. The traffic is the absolute WORST in Texas. The cost of living is too. Did I mention the gestapo like APD? Motorcycle cops hiding all over the ***** place. Austin was THE place in Texas until the early Nineties. Once Dell started booming, there went the town.

That being said, IMO San Antonio is THE place now days. It's the perfect spot to cycle. A stones throw from New Braunfels, Fredricksburg, and Bandera. The best part is you don't have to venture out onto 35 to get there, just head west.

Houston has the best restaurants, & adult entertainment. The coast is 45 minutes south. It is anything but dusty. As a matter of fact, it's quite tropical. The tropical humidity & influx of people from all over the world are definate minuses.

Dallas Ft Worth has it's own plus & minuses. Good food, good nightlife, great shopping, easy to travel from, better weather than Austin, SA, & Houston, less bugs, & better roads (IMO). I've only been here a bit over a year, but it's not too bad so far. The biggest issue is finding good places to ride.

Gotta disagree.

1. Dallas has the worst traffic in TX. it would never, ever take you 3 hours to get across Austin - on any day, in any traffic condition. and I've had plenty of 3+hr trips across Dallas during rush hour and construction.

2. if the gay tree hugger thing bothers you, you'll no doubt hate any college town, Austin is no exception.

3. IMHO Austin got better after Dell and the other tech/financial firms arrived. for somebody who doesn't care for the lefties, you would have thought it far worse before.

4. Austin has the best location in Texas for weather and everything else. It's CENTRAL! That means: no snow like in Dallas, not too dry like other parts of western and southern Texas, and not too wet like the coast. Also, it's landscape is very diverse, green, hilly, and has lakes ta boot.

5. True, San Antone is a great city and has more of a "Texas" flare, but dollar for dollar - Austin is the place to be for anybody under fifty.

Hey Skyler!

I grew up in Houston (Spring) and went to UT too! I was on the 5.5 year plan though! Where in Houston are you from?

Traffic here does suck, but you can manage. I live and work in Lakeway. I don't like Lakeway, but it's 2 miles to my office. I'm moving in with my girlfriend in December, she lives on S. Lamar near the Broken Spoke.

karamazov,
You hit the nail right on the head. I'm 26 years old. Speaking of being young, I'm getting on my bonnie and heading to 6th street. Catch y'all later!

PS...you couldn't pay me to live in San Antone.

Troe GDiablo - I havn't been yet and so have a romantic idea of what it's like.

So this will give you a laugh...

I see myself pulling into a sleepy small town full of beaten up dusty Chevy pickups driven by guys in 10 gallon hats, and every other bloke looks like Paul Newman..

What is the film I'm thinking of - 'Cool Hand Luke???'

I've never had a three hour trip across Dallas, and I've lived here all my life. If you are talking about Dallas, the mid cities and Fort Worth during rush hour it's possible ,but that's about eighty miles all told.

As for the gay tree hugger thing, it really has nothing to do with Austin being a college town. We have plenty of college towns in TX that are not a mecca for tree hugger types and California transplants. There is actualy a bill in the state legislature meant to shut down the flow of Californians into our great state, ok that's a lie but it isn't a bad idea  Austin is simply an artsy liberal city, but the surrounding areas are very conservative. As are many of our other college towns (Lubbock for example- Go Red Raiders!) :-D

Just had to throw in my Two Cents worth in for...

San Antonio! Born and raised there, plenty of character (not to mention great restaurants) all over the fricking place. My only problem is that everytime I go home for the holidays, the place reminds me more and more of Houston, with the traffic. Then again, the two times that I've been to Lone Star Triumph in Austin, was struck how bad the I-35 traffic can really be up there. Every city in TX has it's own unique charm and character, but I'll admit that I'm rather biased, so sue me!

I've read or heard somewhere that I 35 between Austin and San Antionio is one of the worst stretches of traffic in the US, and that it was better to take a stagecoach 150 years ago from Austin to San Antonio than it is to take a car now.

I went to SA one time to pay a speeding ticket I got there. It took me 40 minutes to get there, and 3 hours to get home...suckola.

yeah, all the construction around San Marcos makes for some interesting driving, thankfully it's not as scary as my memories of the Long Island Expressway when I was in school! And the Courthouse on Frio Street in S.A. can lick my schweaty &*%#* Then again, Mi Tierra and Pico De Gallo are right around the block from there, so it's not all bad.

Congratulations. Something like this is on my short list of bikes to have.

Did you consider buying rough and restoring yourself, or did you start out looking for a restored bike?

Enjoy the hill country ride on the new to you ride.
