A must have for bike transport in a pick-up bed is loading ramps. When I was younger I just used a 2x8, but now I use an aluminum bike ramp. Buy two, one for the bike, and one for you to walk on. Make sure to cargo strap the ramps to the underside of your truck so they won't slip off while you are loadind or off-loading your bike.
I can load and unload my bonneville solo, every time w/ no problems to date.
If you use the bikes engine to assist in loading the bike, be carefull the first time. You will probally pull in the clutch before the bikes CB is over the tailgate, and it will begin to roll backward. That means right hand applying the front brake, while slightly twisting the throttle. It can be a little akward the first time, but once you get it down it's as easy as kick starting a GB500. Check out the Condor pit stop front wheel chock/lock for compression free truck bed transport.
