I don't know if this will actually work but I got it in am email and thought I'd pass it on. And hell, if you get yourself into a situation where you risk points and a couple of bucks will get you out, it may be worth a shot.
Quote:
IF YOU GET A TRAFFIC TICKET
This system has been tried and it works in every province.
If you get a speeding ticket or went through a red light or whatever the case may be, you're going to get points on your license. This is a method to ensure that you DO NOT get assessed demerit points:
When you get your fine, send in a cheque to pay for it. If the fine is $79.00 make the cheque out for $82.00 or some small amount over the fine.
The system will then have to send you back a cheque for the
difference, however here is the trick: DO NOT CASH THE REFUND CHEQUE!
Throw it away! Points are not assessed to your license until all financial transactions are complete. If you do not cash the cheque, then the transactions are NOT complete. The system has received it's money, is satisfied and will no longer bother you. This information comes from an unmentionable computer company that sets up the standard databases used by every province. Send this to everyone you know. You never know when they may need a break.
Love thy neighbor, but don't get caught!

Snopes says no.
The last ticket I got (turned right on red at a "no turn on red" intersection) I went to court for and noticed that I and all other traffic offenders were basically automatically offered a reduced charge of "impeding traffic" with no points if we agreed to plead responsibility. Pretty good deal if you ask me. If you can manage to make the time it definately seems to be worthwhile to make the trip to court rather than just paying the fine by mail.

Why does this sound like an E-mail from a tribal king/oil minister from Nigeria?

I have done the same thing for probably around 10 tickets over the past 20 years. Only, here the plea is "no contest".
no points, no insurance hikes, no driving school, court costs typically less than if you had just paid the ticket - can't beat the deal and has worked every time :-D

You might laugh but a similar thing happened to me..
Was in the cage and got done for doing 106 down the M4 (that was AFTER I hit the brakes.. well I was young and foolish and it was an RX7 soft-top and it was a sunny afternoon officer).
Over 100mph and it's an automatic ban, points, fine, they throw the book at you (unless you're a politician or rock star in which case you get off with a caution).
So my date in court, get away with a two week ban, £160 fine and 6 points.
Do the ban, pay the fine. Send my licence in to get endorsed with the points.. but.. and I can only think this affected the outcome.. also fill in the change of address box, since I hadn't changed it since I moved house.
Get this.. the licence comes back, address changed, but no points on it. I figured it got sent to the other department and they sent it straight back out to me.
It gets better...
Six months later I get a cheque from the Paymaster General.. for £160.. "Received in error" it says on the compliments slip..
I cashed it and went out and got plastered. :-D :-D

A friend of mine tried that trick last year, it doesn't work in New York State.

I don't think an International Drivers License helps.

There are only two ways to avoid a traffic ticket and neither is a sure fire method but work quite often.
The first way is to not get a ticket at all when you are pulled over. When you get pulled over - be ready, seat belt on, hands on wheel, radio off, and window rolled down (if you are in a car). When the officer asks you if you know why he pulled you over say...
"Sir, I imagine that I must have been speeding, and if I was - I certainly deserve a ticket because I wasn't paying enough attention."
You'd be surprised how many cops won't write you a ticket if you give them that little speech! But if the guy does take you up on the offer and does write you a ticket, you'll have to resort to the second method...
Don't pay the ticket - request a court date. Go to court ON TIME. Dress nicely (but not TOO nice) and DO NOT bring a lawyer. When you meet with the clerk magistrate or judge say the following:
"Sir/Maam, I am not contesting the speed (or other infraction). The officer was very courteous and professional, but I just cannot afford the insurance surcharges. If you allow me a second chance, I will do my best to make sure I do not (speed or whatever you did) again."
Now shut your mouth! You just proved to them that you are an honest, responsible person who fully understands the consequences of your actions. You have also complimented the officer which will keep him from trying to screw you as well. You are kind of backing them into a corner too with the surcharge angle because if they give you a ticket at all they know your surcharges will go up big time. So they are faced with either giving you the ticket or letting you off entirely. You also got right to the point instead of wasting their time with a lengthy discussion. Time is a valuable thing in courts these days and they will appreciate you for that as well.
Most of the time these methods do work - a friend of mine is a cop who gave me this advice. and it has worked for me. I've been pulled over about 4 times in the last 15 years (I drive about 35,000 miles a year) and was only issued a ticket once for the absolute minimum he could give (it should have been a much more expensive ticket). That ticket got thrown out completely in court when I used the short speech above.
I can almost guarantee you nothing else will work: challenging the radar gun certificates, hoping the cop will not show, over paying the fine, pictures of the area, other witnesses, NOTHING. Even if the cop was wrong, FORGET YOUR PRIDE! They have all the power and you have NONE. If they want your money they will take it - all you can do is try to make them NOT want to take your money. Stroke thier egos and laugh all the way to the bank!
Hope this helps,
D.
