Is there any safe way to carry extra gas on the Bonnie? Could you mount a gas can on a luggage rack or something?

I'm trying to plan a long ride this fall, and I'm thinking my range limits could be challenged.

Is this safe, or do I need to plan my route around more fuel stops?

Sweat, just my 2 cents but I would probably be happy enough stopping for a fuel break every 130 miles or so.

Thats what I was thinking. I dont know if I would want to strap any extra gas to my bike.

I'd rather stop too, but I'm thinking of West Texas where sometimes there's 200 miles between gas stations. Ever been on I 10 just east of El Paso, I believe around Castroville?

Nothing zip nada for hundreds of miles at a time. Lots of "last gas for xxx miles" kind of signs.

Maybe it's just a Texas thing. Does anyone else run into this anywhere else in the country?

I agree. However... there are some places on this planet where it's a looong way between fuel stops! Here' a good write-up of a fellow Ottawan's trip to James Bay in Northern Quebec James Bay. At one point it was 381 km (approx 230 miles) between fuel stops. Now he was on a Kawasaki Concours, but it's a bit annoying to think that I wouldn't be able to go there on the Bonnie if I wanted to.

I was just looking at a Concours. I'm thinking about one as a future bike purchase. They go for less than 4 grand on ebay. I think almost an 8 gallon tank.

I could modify a bonnie tank to hold more gas. That would be cool, a tourer tank. I could weld a rack on it too.

Yes, we have similar problems over here. Heading west there are less and less fuel opportunities. I have had to pull into private property to buy fuel off of farmers on the odd occasion. Also some fuel stations in the country are not open on weekends, which is when most of us ride...

I have been keeping an eye out for a poly canister that would be suitable for an extra few litres...not that I like the idea of carrying it on my back rack. :???:

Just thinking, maybe one of those little squat fuel cans they make for small boats would do the job? like this?

I went to REI and got a metal bottle that is designed to carry white gas. They have different sizes, up to one gallon. They fit in the pockets of my alice pack nicely. I will only use metal gas cans on a bike because (god forbid) if you go down there is a good chance that the can will rip open and spill gas everywhere.
Gas is heavy, don't take any more extra than you really have too.

Someone posted about this a little while ago. Here are links for auxiliary fuel tanks-

Had to pack extra gas when trippin on a chop with a peanut tank. Think it held 2 pints. Pack a red poly 1gal like for your lawn mower. He!!, use the lawn mower can. Just don't overfill it and try to keep it from the sun.
