took the bonnie out for a ride today, started to fire on one cylinder, left me stranded on side of road, plus oil leaking out of valve cover on left side for the fourth time. I think all the dealer ever did was replace the gasket each time i took it up. ***?

Did you check the coil wires? Mine did that the other day. I hit a bump and it started running on one cyl. and i checked to find one of the coil wires sitting on top of the cam cover.

Check for a very small piece of crud in the pilot jet. Happened to me and drove me crazy till I finally found it.
Have you had the bowls off lately? If so, maybe you dislodged something?

Take off the cam cover and apply a little "Three Bond Liquid Gasket 1104" to the seal and your leak should be history. Also, the proper way to remove the cam cover is to use a rubber mallet to get it loose--no prying under the cam cover--the o-ring type gasket can be damaged easily...the dealer's mechanic used a screw-driver on mine at the 12K valve adjust maintenance and I had a leak on both sides. A little Three Bond and no more leak...even though the gasket was damaged badly on one side. Why would a "mechanic" put it back together with a damaged gasket??? Surely, they would have one in stock in the parts dept.

They put the damaged gasket back on so it would leak on the way home and you'r come back and spend more money with them. I'm going to try and do as much of my own maintenance as possible, I've seen how others work and it frightens me.

I agree, everyone shoyuld try to learn as much as they can about fixing their own bike...Saves money, you don't have to leave it in the shop and be without a ride for weeks, and a lot of mechanics are really not that much better than you are!
I do almost all my own maintenance, learning how to do more all the time. Bikes are a lot easier to work on than cars!
