The engine mounts won't be affected. Typically rigid rear ends lower the back of the bike a lot, like 3-4''. With the stock length front end, and 3-4'' lower rear half, it will make the forks look longer, and you will actually gain some rake since you are tilting the whole bike backwards. It's the opposite of on this forum where members are lowering their front ends to gain quicker handling, with the hardtail you're raising the front end (more rake) and getting slower handling.

Long story short, lowering the back means you'll need a shorter front end to maintain the stock geometry. Plus short forks (and springers) look really cool.

that seems like a good price too, I've seen some good, running Triumph choppers/bobbers going for upwards of 8k.

And that's Canadian $ too! Not quite the deal it used to be, but still 10% less that USA$.

The Bobber pics are great! There are a few that are amazingly similar to what I'm going for (vintage padded solo seat with springs, chrome luggage rack, leather saddlebags, side mounted license plate...),

I don't want to start cutting down my fenders, but I love the way the classic solo seats with the springs look and I'm thinking about getting one for my '05 Speedmaster. I'm actually inspired by the old speed twin. I've looked online and I haven't found anyone who makes these specifically for my bike, but I'm thinking with a vintage seat, 2-3" springs, a solo seat bracket, clip-on mounts... Am I getting into a real project here, or will this be relatively "plug and play" with a couple hours of muscle?

The fall-back plan is to just cop-out and get a solo seat. :???:

rider, very few things are plug and play on the Bonnie line. As far as your seat,IMO your best bet would be the J&P cycles "vintage" online catalog. Thats where my next seat project will come from. :-D Steve

That looks like a stock rake, just with a stupid ugly girder front end. Find a nice hydraulic front end or a decent springer (nice n short) and get rid of those ape hangers; instant bobber!
That and the fat-bob HD tanks!

After much agonizing over price, I passed on this bobber last week. '68, motor in good condition. Title matched the frame. Owner built it, wanted $3,500 but I decided not to go past $3k. Jockey shift, foot clutch, no front brake, no kill switch or ignition switch. Another $1k and it could have been something. Another guy bought it a few days later.

FYI,

I've always liked the work of Flyrite Choppers in Austin. They have several options in their custom bikes. It looks like they're starting production of frames to accept vintage Triumph engines. Check it out:

Wanna buy one?.. it's just about done.

My buddy Joe Rankin is building it. One of the last ones he built was on the front of Walnecks a few months back.
