Newbie Question: Started to change the oil on the Scrambler and noticed that I some type of a special tool to open the oil filler cap which is slotted. What does everyone use?

I don't know about the Scrambler, but on the Bonnie you can use a big flat-head screwdriver.

The screwdriver doesn't damage the slot?

Wrap a rag around it. It has an o-ring so it's not tight.

Better yet,,,,get a large washer from the hardware store and turn it with a small cresent wrench....The curve of the washer will fill the groove 100 times better than a screwdriver......

I like the idea of the washer, but the scramblers exhaust pipes won't allow me to get a crescent wrentch in there. I just can't believe that you would need a special tool. That is ridiculous.

A quarter seems to fit OK if you were in a bind but I carry a tool kit.

The large screwdriver with a rag wrapped around it did the trick. Apparently, the dealer really torqued the plug tight so it took a bit to break the seal of the O-ring. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Now I can take her on a long ride this weekend.

dd,

You'll know by now then, that it's easier to pass a lightly greased camel through the eye of a needle than it is to get oil into the Scrambler. I fashioned a funnel from an old Scottoil bottle to get the new oil into mine. Also fitted one of those alloy raised replacement caps that Jenks, etc sell. Much easier to undo than the standard one.

I did the same thing; replaced the cap with a raised cap from Jenks that has a knurled edge for grip.
I'm about to replace the side cover slotted screws too.
