Earlier this week a friend asked if I could help him do an oil change on his Bonnie as he's not very mechanically minded (or very bright!) Anyway I said I would come round on Saturday to give him a hand. He phoned me this morning in a state of pannick as rather than wait for me to help him he'd changed the oil and filter himself yesterday but, had failed to fill the new filter with oil before running it. I've told him not to worry too much but, he's convinced he's knackered the motor. I really don't think it's a major issue but, what do you chaps think?

Tell ya mate to chill out!!!!

The oil filter doesn't hold much oil as it is (less than .5 litres) so if the entire level of oil was down due to not filling the filter or topping up she will run fine.......

No damage done.......

LaughingBob,
Which one of ya did ya say was, "not very mechanically minded (or very bright!) ?" Perhaps you meant, "experienced" instead. I guess its relative, like the Jan said... :-D

No problem at all with not filling the filter! I doubt that anyone at the shop ever does it, but I could be wrong.

A bigger problem could be that the pump sucks air and needs to be primed. I don't know if oil added to the engine will drain into the filter so this is not an issue. If anyone can tell me it would be good information. I know I saw a lot of foam after changing the oil and don't remember filling the filter.

It's not mandatory, just a good idea. Keeps the no oil pressure period to a minimum.

I never do it on any vehicle other than the Bonneville because the other oil filters mount horizontally or at an angle other than vertical. I've never had a problem and I'm sure he didn't cook the engine.

By the time I got to his place he'd already phoned two dealers one who said they did fill the oil filter prior to fitting and the other who said they didn't. He's happy now anyway. Thanks chaps.
