Looking at tank bags. Truth be told, my main reason is to have a safe place to hold a map and directions for long trips. What kind of experiences have you had? Which will damage the tank less - strap mount of magnetic? I'm looking at the Tour Master Cortech Super Mini.

Matt,I have the bag you mentioned.I`ve never put it on my tank, just strapped to the seat. Do you need somthing just for maps and directions? I have an Endurance tank bag by Frank Thomas? that has a removable map pocket with its own flaps and magnets. The magnets on this thing are stronger than the ones expected to keep the complete "mini bag" on your tank. Your welcome to it if you want. Its never been used. Steve

Both wil put little micro scratches in the clear coat over time dulling the clear coat somewhat. Get a magnetic bag, it is much easier to mess with.

Also, order a TankSlapper kit which is clear plastic and applies with water and can be peeled off if you want to remove it later. www.tankslapper.com. They have kits precut for the Bonnie. Not expensive, about $17 as I recall. That will stop the dulling of the clear coat.

Matt....good choice in tankbags :-D I had a strap on super mini on my honda st and opted for the magnetic for the TBA since the strap on would've been a bit sloppy. For the bonny or thruxton though I would believe you could get the strap mount to work well. You'll have less damage with a strap on bag. A majority of your scratches caused by tank bags are magnetic because typically people don't clean the underside of the tankbag or wipe off the tank before applying the bag..then due to grit, etc. getting between the magnets and tank there tends to be less strength and the bag tends to shift pushing the grit into the tank and scratching it. They're just surface scratches and can be buffed out relatively easily...but still, they're scratches. If you're a clean freak you'll probably do okay with a magnetic but if you're able to go the safe route with a strap mount..do that route. I believe the strap mount one is cheaper too.

Btw...I love my super mini bags. Definitely one of the best bags I've had and will continue to swear by them. The nifty little outlet for running a headset line thru, and stuff comes in really handy too if you have something like a autocomm or mp3 player for longer rides.

The Givi bag is excellent, magnetic with a strap around headstock. Expands as well.

Go to a carpet shop and get some of that black rubber underlay stuff - the sort you put under rugs on wooden floors. It's the same product as bike shops sell at an extortionate price for stopping luggage from slipping. It will stop stuff moving around and scratching the tank - and it can be washed - so doesn't hold grit.

I bought the Tour Master Cortech Super Mini the day I bought my T-100 and have used it only a couple times. I cleaned both the tank and the bag and still noticed the little micro scratches after. It is also so mini that it held a baseball hat, my ipod and wallet and was almost out of room. I had hoped to put a small lunch in there to take to work, but it is just too small. The map holder top would hold a very small folded up map only, so if you wanted a huge map, you are out of luck.

If you really want just a map holder, check these out:

MAP HOLDERS

I'm sure they're also available from other sources as well.
