Jon.. From what I've heard and experienced with new bikes and the break in period..you don't want to over do the rpms for long periods of time. If you go over a bit here and there it's not going to hurt the bike though. This doesn't mean you can't go 65mph or even 70mph. Basically most dealers feel that if you're going 65-70mph or even 55mph you're on a highway and your speed will be relatively stable at those speeds since there wont be the turns nor stops that you have on backroads, etc. The idea is to vary your speed as much as possible thru the break in period to vary the rpms and vary the shifting, which allows the bike to get a taste of varied rpms, varied speeds, etc. Atleast this is what I've been told and have done without problem.
For instance, My wife bought a brand new Harley awhile back right before we were going to do a week long trip..we were worried cause highways were involved. The dealer then told us as long as we played on the highway with varying speeds, shifting up and down and we should be fine..and we were..no problems.
As for your main question about rpm in 4th and 5th... I have a tach on my TBA but rarely use it. Typically just go by the sound that the engine is making. I believe 4th will get me up to about 50mph at about 4,500 rpms though. Best bet is probably to play a bit to see what feels the smoothest as far as shifting..you're not going to break the bike unless you're trying to go 60mph in 1st or something.. at which point you probably shouldnt have that bike..

Otherwise you're doing what everyone else is doing without a tach..which is normal. Hope this helps a bit.
