I hope there was no intention of nationalism - certainly not on my part!
I get what you are saying though.
I am not a member of the BNP - nor do I agree with any of their policies or sentiments! Just maybe a bit too proud that we (the Brits) have managed to re-emerge in the motorcycle inductry with something good! We have virtually no manufacturing left in this country - and no major car manufacturers since MG went South - so having Triumph is really something. It certainly wouldn't make any difference to me what colour the employees of Triumph are - and I hope it wouldn't matter to anyone else either.

Just hold on there my friend,My Land Rover Discovery was built in Solihul England, and Land Rover is a MAJOR U.K firm(even though Ford signs the paychecks).

OK, let me try again....
For many of us, our motorcycles are a luxury.
Comparing it to the Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, ect...sitting in your driveway is not apples to apples.
If most of us purchased our bikes for basic transportation, then the 62 hp Bonnie T-100 was stupid purchase. I could have gotten "more" bike for less money with a Japanese bike.
But these bikes are about soul. And part of that soul is the heritage of the bike, and the fact that you can stick a "Made in England" decal on it if you want.
If you love cigars....you want your real Cuban cigars from Cuba....not Florida.
If you love coffee....you want your real Columbian coffee from Columbia.....not Ethiopia.
If you love Swiss watches, you want your expensive Swiss watch made in Switzerland.....not Hong Kong.
That's how I feel about my British bike. I want it made in England, not Thailand. If it is made in Thailand, then for me, a lot of the appeal of it being a British bike is lost....I might as well have purchased a Japanese bike for less money....or a better bike for the same amount of cash.

Pikey,
You pretty much summed it up in a nutshell. All the tradition in the world won't help Hinckley if they go down the tube. I'd rather get a Triumph made in Thailand than not be able to get one at all.
A lot of the posts assumed that quality would be less in Thailand, and a few years ago that was the rap on products made in Japan. But look at the quality of Toyota and some other "Japanese" cars. They are consistently top rated on all JD Powers surveys.
To compete in a global market you have to keep ALL costs in check. If that means building a factory in Thailand to save on labor makes the difference between a profit or a loss, that could be all the reason you might need to re-locate. Would it hurt some people? Most definitely. But it would hurt more if they had to close their doors.

I went on a tour of the Triumph factory on 12th October this year and the guide said they are definitely going to build complete bikes in Asia for the Asian market.

Hi Lad's,
"Repeated exposure to products that are both inexpensive and sub-standard has conditioned many of us to make snap value judgments based on price or country of origin."
I read this today in one of my monthly tool catalogs,I think this statement just about sums it up for most of us.

Anybody want to pony up $12,000 for a Bonneville? NO???? then I guess we might have to build a few bikes in Asia then. I for one wouldn't want to overcharge for product like some local companies...motorcycle or otherwise...
Cheers

Yeah would think with the average Thai not being all that rich, they would get those import duties on cars and motorcycles under control! But then again you go to Bangkok, and you would think they were all rich with all the Mercedes, BMW's, and other high end cars running around there!

Just wish that they could make it economical for someone like me to buy a T100 here in Thailand. UK price = £6000, here, with import duties and all taxes paid - about £10,000! Bummer!

The factory rep/guide told us that is exactly why they are going to build complete bikes over there. The import duties etc, would be avoided.
The whole reasoning behind the Asian factory is it will increase sales and open up the Asian market by making the bikes affordable to you, because there wll be less purchase tax.
