Has anyone put in an air box modification kit without replacing the exhaust? If so, what are your opinions on the performance results.

How about the results for just replacing the stock air filter with a K&N filter? Could you tell a noticeable difference? Does this change in the air filter require any carburetor modifications?

I have not yet removed the AI system on my Bonneville. My bike is 100% stock, and I hope to gain some insight from others who have done similar mods. Thanks for the input.

Airbox removal without other changes will probably make your bike run too lean. The point of the airbox removal is to flow more air--if you don't also add more fuel to the mix with bigger carb jets your engine will runner leaner and hotter.

On the other hand, if the stock exhast is restrictive enough, it acts like a plug, anyway, so less risk. But in that case, why should you want to pull or otherwise modify the airbox anyway?

So...short version...don't pull the box unless you are planning to make changes to jets and exhaust.

K&N won't hurt. I don't know if it'll help.

I doubt replacing the stock paper filter with a K&N is going to help. If you pull the snorkel off and look at it you will see how restrictive it is. The NARK or British Customs kit is the way to go although they are pricey.

Bigman,

Your post left me a little confused. You began by talking about airbox modification and different airbox filters. If this is what you meant, I advise against doing either with stock silencers. Either would be a waste of money and would not help your performance. Airbox removal with stock silencers could cause problems.

You ended your post talking about the AI system (Air Injection system). This has NOTHING to do with the AIRBOX. Removal kit for the AI costs about $24. Removal kit for the Airbox costs hundreds of dollars. AI removal neither helps nor hurts performance.

Moving more air through the engine requires more fuel and that means changing jets, shimming needles, adjusting pilot screws, etc. IMHO, it is VERY hard to move more air through the engine with the stock silencers--they are VERY restrictive, so regardless of what you do to the intake side you will still not be moving more air through the engine.
