there seems to be a bit of controversy on the Scrambler, so heres my 2 cents on touring with it, if anyone is curious.
just completed 1000 mile weekend to Laughlin Nevada on the Scrambler. Rode with assorted big Harleys and Gold Wings , so we were movin.
first the Pros.
without a headwind the bike has no problem maintaining 80-85 easily.
with a headwind, which is common in the desert, you gotta ring it's neck, but it does keep up.
going up a tooth would probably help, and I will try this.
The seat is not bad, the large size really allows you to strap about any size bag you want.
You push alot of wind but it is not too bad, a summerscreen would help, but I would be concerned it would effect cruising speed. Can anyone comment???
The bike itself was a rock, did not miss a beat, very trustworthy.
The Cons:
as I said the gearing could be moved up. after seaching for 6th gear about 2000 times , I have yet to find it.
My mileage was not great, 120 miles to reserve.
The rear shocks would tend to yo - yo over uneven pavement slabs. to the point I actually had to reduce speed to keep my eyes in my head.
Can anyone comment on the Ohlin replacements?
The pipe does get hot a desert temps, So if you ride in shorts , don't go there. The guy I saw at a gas stop wearing his bathrobe and slippers while riding his Electra glide is probably not a candidate.
heck no one will buy this as a touring bike anyway
Overall the bike had heart, and was a blast. As we traded bikes over the weekend everyone loved the bike. I Even off roaded on some fire roads.
Every one we met was generally amused, interested or confused about the scrambler. It does generate interest and smiles.
To the point my Harley buddies were feeling a bit left out.
