Went to Deal's Gap -Tail of the Dragon- Hiway 129 this week with my son who is home on Army leave. Had 135 mains in the Bonnie cause that was what was working well with My D&D pipes, K&N filters at my home which is about 800 feet high. Have been up over 2,000 with no problems around here(Alabama). North Carolina air must be real thin(2,500ft plus) cause that bad boy would hardly run above 5,000rpm-sputtering , banging , shooting flames, etc. Wow! Too fat on the mains!! I didi not have any jets and they are unobtainable as far as I know in Robbinsville so I took the air filters off and it worked better but still not lean enough. We ran anyhow-kind of hard to get it really going but at least rideable. The next day a front came in and the air was probably heavier because she ran pretty good and we managed to do some good hard running. I also had my Speed triple which suffered none in the altitude . If you go there remember that your jets are part of your tool kit!! I will take mine and tune for that Elevation from now on! Almost a bummer of a trip but it worked out OK. Just BEWARE of thin air!!
That is some road-the whole area is beautiful.

I'll be down there next week for the NTBF rally! Last year I had no problems, even went to the highest point in Tenn. at 6,300 ASL and had no problems...

I used to live in Denver (5,280 ft.) and I would ride to elevations of 12K.....now I live on the coast and I have never re-jetted...I believe it to be a myth.....My bike performs perfectly no matter where I live....

Thunder - although I haven't ridden my Bonneville in Denver, I don't expect it would act much differently than my old BMW R100GS, when I took it from Cleveland, OH to Moab, Utah via Denver, then across the Eisenhower Pass (11000 ft?). The bike didn't feel quite as strong crossing the pass as it does at lower altitude, but it didn't run badly at all.

Maybe if I lived at 11K feet I'd have my bike rejetted for that environment. But for just riding through it on my way to lower altitude ... I think I'd leave things alone.

HiVel - I wonder if you're jetted too rich to begin with? I wouldn't think that going for 88 feet to 2500 feet elevation would make any significant difference if you weren't too rich to begin with. Just a guess.

could be- I did not know I I had ignition problems and went rich to 135 mains to cure the stumbles=after curing the ignition situation I did not go back down- I will give it a try even though I hate to remove the bowls!

HiVel,

Sounds like you are way too rich in your mid-range (needles). At 5000 rpm, mine is still running mostly on the needles. At 6000 rpm on the Dyno, the main jets came into the picture. If you have shims on your needles, you may not need them. I assume your bike is an 865cc with Thruxton needles--they may be too rich. The stock needles in my 790cc are a little rich (12 A/F ratio).

I recommend a dyno run with EGA. Changing main jets is not the answer to your problem, IMHO.
