Another retired USAF here.. :) Been out of the service for 12 years and finally broke down and got another motorcycle. It has been 30 years since I last rode a bike.. (wow, dosent feel the long) Took the MSF course last weekend and brought home a new 06 America yesterday. I love it!! I'm still not entirely comfortable on it yet. I've put 25 "training" miles on it just riding in the subdivision where there are a few empty steets and deadends.

I got the graphic/silver America and love the look. Only additions where the tach and tall sissy bar. They have a $500 free accessories promotion going on currently. Other then that it's strickly stock.

I'd like to change the exhast pipes to get a little more thump out of the sound but don't want really loud pipes. Any suggestions?

thanks

Fran:

Congrats on your new bike. I have a Thruxton, but was down at the dealer with a friend this week helping him pick out a black America, and can see why the bike is so popular. Nice relaxed riding position, and tons of character.

Happy Trails.

Congrats on your bike and welcome back to riding again! I just bought an 04' a few weeks back. Test rode a speedmaster and america last year with stock exhaust, so I know what you mean. The guy I bought my bike from had put D&D pipes on the bike before my purchasing it. It's not overwhelmingly obnoxious loud, but it does have a bit more sound to it. Perfect solution for myself as I didn't want something that just drove me up a wall. They're slip-on pipes too, however, he did have a rejet kit put on as well. I'm not the person to ask if you need to or don't need to rejet when you put slip-on's on your bike. This is my first "cruiser" so I'm just now really learning about aftermarket exhaust, and other cruiser mods. Not exactly something I was too worried about in my sport bike days.
Possibility for you to look into though.

Stetson,
You got a great bike, enjoy the ride. I had a set of D & D pipes but found them to be too loud and sharp sounding. Switched to Staintunes, which are a bit pricy, but are Stainless Steel and will be there as long as you have the America. Nice mellow sound, switched to 135 mains with stock 42 pilots, snorkle removed and three turns out on the air screws, runs great. Just came in from a 275 mile ride in Tn, NC, and North Georgia and averaged 50 mpg...pretty hard to beat.
Good luck in your choice.

Welcome to the site, as a TBA owner you'll also wanna check out BonnevilleAmerica.com some great info there as well.

As for pipes I have the Triumph off roads (TOR's) and love them.
You can purr through town or make em growl once you learn their sweet spots. Kinda like playin an instrument.
Gives the bike some sound without being obnoxious.
And without rejetting.
If you watch Ebay or the classifieds here or at BA.com you can find some at a pretty reasonable price.

You'll want to get rid of your AI though or they'll poppin all over the place.

Great choice for a bike.. I love mine. As far as pipes go, I can definately tell you that D&D's are going to be LOUD! You can ask anyone that just rode with me on the Charlotte RAT ride today. My bike is LOUD.

I like it that way. I can set off car alarms. If you are not looking for this type of pipe, you might try Thunderpipes.... Maybe somebody that has a set can give their input on how these sound.

You definitely need to check out WWW.Bonnevilleamerica.com. it is the premier site for the America/speedmaster as its focus is on those bikes only.

You might check out thunderbike pipes from New Zealand. They are somewhat pricey but they sound very nice. Not at all overly loud...they give the bikes a nice growl that is neither overly aggressive nor could it be categorized as wimpy. They make the bike sound very Kewl and they provide a definite seat of the pants performance upgrade. They do not come with jets and in fact the site advertises no jetting needed.

Most folks do rejet though and do at least minimal mods to the airbox ...example given simply pulling the snorkel and istalling a UNI filter for improved air flow.

I believe the most Atypical setup for an America/Speedmaster of the 790 Cc variety is T-bike pipes installed/ AI removed and CA . charcoal boxes removed as well if you happen to have gotten a CA bike/ 130 main jets in and retain the stock pilot jets at 42 and the mixture screws at around 3 to 31/4 turns out.

That worked well for me at this point. The bike sounds like a Triumph/ has greatly improved get em up and go and has nearly zero popping on deceleration. The popping if and when it occurs is mostly an audible burble or two from the pipes. If popping or back firing is occuring at the airbox you can actually feel it in your butt. Hard backfiring thru the airbox is not good and in some cases people have even sploded the airbox from a single powerful backfire.
