Hello all,

First post.

Bought my Scrambler in Little Rock three days ago and absolutely love it--great all-around bike and very good style. To tell you how much I love it, I also own a BMW 1200GS. I must be either nuts or in love--probably the later.

A couple of questions:

I have what appears to be an oil leak around the crankcase seams and the dealer says it's cosmoline. However, it's only at the seam. He said after a couple of washes, it will disappear and these engines do not leak--period. Have you all had the same experience?

I have a major chirping-like whine coming from the engine area from what I think is the primary. Any answers? Will this decrease over time? I think the Cycle World review mentioned it, but mine seems much worse than they mentioned.

What's all this about AIS removal? What is it and how do you do it? I like the stock exhaust, so I think I'll keep it.

Anyway, great bike.

I will post some pictures soon.

Thanks,

Happ

Keep an eye on that leak, if it doesn't go away in 500 miles, have them fix it at the first service..They do leak sometimes, but generally are pretty tight...I had a leak around one of the gear cover bolts, I just pulled the bolt, put silicone on the thread, no more problem.

The whiny gear train is normal, thats what people are talking about when they say these bikes sound like a sewing machine...Only cure is louder pipes, but thats a good thing anyway! :-D

AI is a system to inject clean air into the exhaust after combustion for emissions purposes. Its generally removed to keep the headers from turning blue, as it increases the temp in the exhaust pipes. Removing it also eliminates some hoses and tubes from the engine, giving a cleaner and simpler look. Thats why I pulled mine. The AI is the two metal tubes in your sparkplug well, with rubber hoses going up under the tank. There is a little pump deal on the frame under the tank, with hoses back to the intakes and airbox. Its really easy to remove, about half hour tops, you need a few odds and ends to plug holes with thopugh. Heres a link to the place I bought my kit from, worked great.

AI removal kit

Enjoy that ride!!!

This is the second new Scrambler I heard of leaking. I get mine any week now. I will advise if it has the same problem. Please let us know if it clears up. Where exactly is the leak?

Enjoy the ride.

Wow these scramblers are popping up all over the place

they will of course because they are great looking bikes

congratulations Happnin and welcome to the site

AIS is the air injection system installed by Triumph to make the engine run leaner and so meet European emmissions regs - as I understand it air is injected after the exhaust vale to burn any remaining fuel and so clean up the exhaust gasses

I had the dealer remove the AIS before it left the showroom they fitted a couple of plugs to blank off where the AIS connects to the engine - called the Air Eliminator Kit

My dealer has a demo scrambler that has the afermarket exhaust on - it sounds absolutely AWESOME!! especially as he started it in the shop

have fun with your new bike dude

Really appreciate the quick advice.

I honestly do believe it's the Cosmoline.

Bill said he visited the factory and said the engines are so advanced now you can't believe it.

Thanks again,

David

Happnin,

I had a leak on mine from new which left a puddle of oil on the crankcase at the back of the cylinders. I traced it to the bolt that holds the oil pressure switch and oil line to the engine. The oil was running down the oil line and dripping onto the crankcase. I tightened it (compressing the copper washers a bit) and the leak disappeared.

If you just want a better sound rather than chasing horsepower, I did the bafflectomy on mine and I'm happy enough with that.

Happ-

My Scrambler also has the seepage around the crankcase covers but it seems to have stopped. I have not cleaned it off because I want the mechanic to see it tomorrow when I bring it in for the 600 mile check-up.

I also have a big adventure tourer (Tiger, not a GS) and I am choosing to ride the Scrambler all the time. I am liking it more and more.

I rode it (the scrambler) today in 30 mph winds. Not pleasant.

I just bought a Scrambler today. The dealer also had the closed course pipes on it. Way kool sound! I bought the pipes, but I will put the stock pipes on until I get the bike stickered for taking on to the military base I work at, they check for excessive noise when they do a safety inspection. Can I plug the air injection with the stock pipes right away? Will that cause any problems, like pipe bluing?
When I take the bike in for the 600 mile service I will have the dealer re-jet for the closed course pipes. They had a Thruxton with the CC pipes, air injection removed, and K&N air filters. It was so impressive, I bought the scrambler right then. I noticed the pipes were blued from the engine to the bend at the frame. The Thruxton had 1000 miles on it and had been a demo.
