I've had my 06 black bonneville for 4 weeks & covered 420 miles, I clean it after every ride, but there are rusty stains around the spokes on the front wheel (where they go into the rim) & the hex bolts that hold the handle bars on are also showing signs of rust.
I'm booked in for my 500mile service next week, should I get the dealer to replace the rusty bits?
I'm not happy that the bike is going rusty before the first service

That's strange, I've ridden mine through wet roads a few times and didn't clean it very well (oops) and there was no rust.

That is no acceptable. I wonder if the bike was not properly prepaired for shipping from the factory? I would demand the replace the parts or have the bike detailed.

What I do with spoked wheels is clean them with WD40 once a week. Did you know vasaline is a great rust remover?

My bike has been sat covered in roadsalt for a number of weeks and only just starts showing bits of rust like this.

A bit as you say where the spoke nipple meets the rim, some of the allen heads are a bit spotty, bits of rust in the wheel rims. It's the oil pipes that show the worst signs of corrosion.

I'm not too worried as it will clean off. I do remember my bike came new covered in a protective grease which I didn't try too hard to clean off.

I would say just clean the rust off and protect with whatever works for you. Don't let it spoil your enjoyment of the bike.

Dic,
Are you wet washing after every ride to clean? I hope not. Many clean-nicks clean the bike, right before putting it away. Moisture promotes rust. Clean it before you ride, when it's warm, and there's time for it to dry quickly after you wipe down. I wet wash once, sometimes twice a year, and put on 6-8K per season not going anywhere in particular, in all weather. I dry wash with spray on ProtectAll with Carnauba Wax and Microfine cloths, and soft damp sponge wipe only where necessary when rarely needed. Once I used a hose - ugh. I finish off with HD Swirl & Scratch Treatment from time to time, and is all shinny and good for me. Yeah the handlebar hex bolts seem to throw some rust, I noticed after being caught out in the rain late at night before making it to the garage. I cleaned and lightly applied paint to retard this where necessary, and this worked for me OK.

The weather over the last 4 weeks has been cold, I've been using my bike to go to work (20 miles each way) so by the time I get home the bike had a good covering of dirt & salt. I hosed most of the dirt off, then used a bucket of soapy water to sponge the rest of the bike, hose off the soapy water/dirt - start engine for a minute, then put the bike in the garage.
It does not dry over night due to the temperature, so the bike is damp for a few days.

Well there's the sign. Too much wet wash, not enough dry time. I'd say, your noticed rust spots are, unfortunately, not abnormal. You can always get a power dryer mate. Or a throw-down Honda for commuting - haa ha.

hi
rust ,oh no . i've rode a bmw gs for 3 winters wet days only, painted the thing with waxoil the first week i bought it intending to use for the bad weather, few times in the last three years have put a little extra on forks ,calipers etc. not washed it at all, yesterday decided to clean, sprayed with degreaser left for 30 minutes, then used muc off, jet washed off .well tried too . still loads of waxoil on it. all day today cleaned with a paint brush with petrol on it ,rags with fuel on them , done one side only, its a pig to get off ,lot of ***** in three years. one little bit of ally with white fur on it, must of missed that bit. so well pleased with that.the only trouble i have had is the calipers sticking on with the salt.a Harley that i bought started to rust after 2 days just before x-mass,gutted. its now had the treatment. will look a***** heap by june but it won't rust no more.to use thin oils is a waste of time, 20 /50 is better, thicker is better still. you can spray grease round the linkages . try not to get oils on the rubber parts as they will rot in no time. you could have your wheels rebuilt useing stainless nipples and spokes, but why should you , the dealers will say (its the salty roads) had yer money and don't give a ---- . lag the thing in oil and enjoy , if you trade it in 3 years time they only go by the year and mileage anyway ,as long as it looks ok from 7 ft away. in the past i have kept them pristine and got no money for them when i traded in ,sat in the garage and not really enjoyed them because not wanting to get them wet and dirty. don't care any more.

I seem to recall (possibly read here on this forum) that washing your bike with hot soapy water after exposure with salt ladened roads starts a chemical reaction which exacerbates the corrision?

It was recommended that only cold water be used.

These bikes are not well known for the stock chrome actually it sucks ! I have been chasing rust since 1 mo. The side & valve covers have have done real well I assume they are not made ( Chromed) by Triumph? These bikes have bullet proof engines the rest you gotta put up with to enjoy the good things that come with To me its worth the trouble Reminds me of my AH 3000 days & my 1st 65 Bonne Try the dealer gig You might get lucky???v Good luck!!
