LOUDER'NHELL!
actually....... about as loud as a set of blown out D&D cans.

I'm making a Bonnie Bagger:
Leather "Pony Express" saddle bags, and matching leather top pack. Gonna return the taller factory bars in place (since powder-coated Black), keep the mid-controls, and I've been working on some fish tails reminiscent of a Vilocette'tude.

It's not dialed in yet, but I Dyno'ed at 70.7 hp and 52.3 torque, albeit with a dip in mid-range and lean up top. I went home and added a couple shims to the standard Bonnie needle, and exchanged the bellmouth intake for the cheap 'turbulent' plastic one. The shims addressed some of the lean condition, but I might want to return the bellmouth, as it seemed to be starving for air (or fuel....) at the top. I'm given to believe that a Thruxton needle may be JUST the the thing I need.....
Can somebody tell me the part number and/or source for an '04 Thruxton needle?

Beautiful - It's a Vincent Black Shadow with a vertical twin engine. Nice!

Pat, you are a madman!
Bike looks FANTASTIC!
I second the subtle yet very-much-there-and-how-sweet-it-is nod
to the Vincent - you got some Black Shadow in your soul, for sure, and
exciting indeed to see all the details coming together so well - can't wait to see it with the new bags.

Wonderfully well done, keep up the good work!

Perhaps you've posted this already, but where oh where did you find those
pipes???

Cheers,

D9

04BB,
You came through for me again, MUCH THANKS!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

.....and I LOVE the idea of my bike reminding folk of a Vincent; I'll go out to the garage and read some of your comments to to the BonnieBlack.

The pipes are nothing more than "fish tail extensions" from outa JC Whitney. They're a straight through 1 3/4" pipe that I cut 6" off. I bent some straight wire to the desired angle and took it to a local muffler shop and had him bend some exhaust pipe stock that I use to go between my headers and the fish tails. The baffles are from 'Big City Thunder' installed in my joiner pipes. It's amazing how something seemingly so simple works so well at providing enough low-end back pressure, mid-range, and boot scoot boogie at the top!

Pat -

They for sure look sweet! You got 70 hp outta a 790. That has got to be a record of some sort!

Now I got questions. Is the dip in the middle cuz it's "rich" or "lean" ? If it's rich in the middle but lean on top. That shim is gonna make the middle richer and not gonna cure the lean on top. (the shim causes the needle to open the main earlier) I think I'd remove all the shims (cure the dip in the middle if it's cuz it's rich there), and go 1 size up on the mains (Fix the lean on top). Leave the Bellmouth.. it's obviously flowin some air.

Now my only criticism... you gotta get some nicer lookin clamps for them mufflers! (Or chrome them buggers, if you really need that much clamping force)..

Leave the lower bars.. works with the little fly-screen ... makes a statement!

Love it mate!

Chris,

My lean condition (15) exists between 3,500 & 5,000 rpm and begins to dip to (12) @ 5,500 rpm. It starts to climb again, peaking (15) @ 7,600 rpm. It was suggested that adding shims would not be the way to address the problem, but might provide a temporary BandAid. They wanted me to go up to as much as a 145 main jet, but they thought that the Thruxton needles might take care of the mid-dip as well as richen the top end. On the other hand, it was also suggested that the dip at 5,500 rpm is characteristic of straight pipes anyway.......

I think I'll remove all of the shims in the morning, as you suggested (there was one in there during the Dyno run). Sure wish there was somewhere I could buy some Thruxton needles on a Sunday.......

- BUSTED -

Yeah, those pipe clamps are hokey as all hail. I actually DO need that kind of clamping force, but now that the pipes have been compressed, I need to find some better looking clamps. I have some, but NONE of them are quite big enough. If/when I get this whole thing dialed in, I'll pay more attention to the cosmetics....... I wonder how much it'll cost me to get those joiner pipes chromed.....

Regarding the Dyno numbers:
Initially my print-out in September was 61.0 "SAE" Horsepower.
My print-out a couple weeks ago was 59.64 "SAE" (needing a replacement of main jet since adding the bellmouth)
Both runs on the same machine.

A month ago, I went to a neighboring Dyno (owned by the same folk), and got a reading of dangerously lean conditions at my first attempt of the fish tails. It read:
52.6 & 47.1 @ "STD" horsepower
Todays run with a different baffle set-up and 140 mains ON THE SAME MACHINE gave me:
70.5 & 52.4 "STD" horsepower

So the biggest difference is that one machine is set up to print the results in "SAE" Horsepower........
And the other one down the road is set up to print the results as "STD" Horsepower.......

If I'm not mistaken, "STD" gives the illusion of being MORE....., but I'm uncertain by how much.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sooooo..... I'm reluctant to change the main jets until I get some Thruxton needles, as I hear that frequently people are going down a size after they're installed. What do ya think Chris, up from my 140's to 145's or Thruxton needles???

Dude, I like your pipes! It sounds like you're just about dialed in on the air/fuel. Can't wait to hear those things.

Can you believe this weather? I planned on sitting out today but saw the sun poking thru and went for it . Danny and I went to Ione to check out their new skate park. Really nice day for a ride. Cold, but nice.

70 std is probably like mid sixties.Impressive.Can't wait to compare the two.You need to drag my ass down to that dyno. For kicks we can dyno the S3!
