Has anyone else had a problem with the rubber straps on, say, the battery and some of the electrical pieces rotting and/or breaking? Today I took off the left side cover to look at the snorkle and the two little wiring boxes above it just kinda flopped off. Upon inspection, you could see that the rubber straps around them had frayed. Now, I guess the fixes are pretty simple, electrical tape and such, but this is a little disappointing and a bit worrisome. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what are your observations/recommendations. Thanks.

Yeah my battery straps, the boot for the oil light and the mount for the relays are just about shot. Bit disappointing on a 14 month old bike.

About 2 months ago, I believe, there was a thread on this subject. Yes, many have experienced the problems you describe. Some have not, though, so there may be a relationship with which supplier made the parts.

I experienced the same thing. My solution was to get a bicycle inner tube and cut out a small section (couple of inches). I then slipped it over the little box and then slid it on the hanger. Works well and one inner tube will last you a loooong time if the problem pops up again.

Good tip! I use a bicycle tube for similar reasons. I cuts rings of tube of various widths to suit the situation and it works well.

The battery strap on my '03 lasted about 1 year - and that's being generous. I just took it off (well, the pieces of it) and threw it away. I'm not sure what purpose it serves. I don't ride upsode down all that much. Even if the battery might jump around a bit over bumps, there doesn't seem to be any way it cold short out, even for an instant. I've thought about gluing a pice of fairly dense foam to the bottom of the seat, directly over top of the battery, just to keep it from bouncing on bumps, but I 'm not sure it's necessary.

Yep, had the zack same on my 04 bonnie. I solved with large ties (and the original strap clips) for the battery (I don't like the idea of battery movment, however small, I have phobia about developing electrical short problems from previous bikes), and another for the side panel elec., tho I like the rubber inner-tube option.
