I'm getting the Ikons today and of course, will rush to the bike and start twisting wrenches as soon as the box is opened.

I'm guessing the bike should be put on the lift for the operation. Any other suggestions before I start this project? I hear some of you had trouble removing the stock units--plan to have my rubberhead hammer ready go.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Liontari,

I put the Ikons on my bike a month or so ago. Did it on the centerstand - took about 10 minutes. Either on the center stand or a jack, just do one side at a time and the rear will pretty much stay in the correct alignment for mounting. The right side on mine did take a little coaxing to free the top mount - left side slide right off.

I did the Ikon fork springs (with oil refresh) and new tires (second set of Dunlop 501's) a couple of weeks later (need a lift for this procedure).

Rides like a whole new bike. It does make the bumps more noticable, but it really keeps the tires glued to the road.

Liontari,
I had to basically wreck one of my shocks to get it off (they are ****e anyway). When you do get them off clean all the paint off the mounting lugs with a scraper and/or emery cloth. Then apply some grease or silverslip to the lugs.

Motorcycle Cruisers has a article in their lastest issue on changing shocks and fork springs, and they do it on a Bonneville.
There is also a nice little write up by the editor, on how much she enjoyed herself on a recent trip riding a Bonnie. She is really a fan of bigger cruisers, but couldn't snag one for this particular ride. She talked about how much more she probably enjoyed the ride with the small Triumph.

Great info, thanks. The sun is coming out--I'll be able to test ride after the procedure.
