What are the best spark plugs for an America? Are the NGK IX Iridium Spark Plugs for $15.95 better than the Splitfire spark plugs for $3.99 each or the Triple Platinum spark plugs for $5.99 each? :???:

Iridiums gave me a tad more midrange acceleration. Not much but i could definatly feel it. The others i haven't tried.

IMHO, go with what the factory put in--especially since they used the best--NGK. Your bike is low compression and should not be too hard on plugs. Being in an air-cooled engine may shorten the plug life a bit; however, your best "bang for the buck" is still the stock plug. Some recommend changing plugs every 6K miles; however, they should go twice that long in these engines. If you raise the compression ratio to 10.5:1 or greater, then you would want to change plugs more often.

Thats what Iridims are.......they're made by NGK and supposed to be the better plug, which as i said turned out to be true for me. So why not use em? Triumph may well have used them in the bikes if not for the higher cost. As i said, they add very little performance, but they Do add. But not enough to where i could see triumph justifying the extra cost. And with what many of us have gone thru to add a little power i see this as the easiest of all ways to gain some more. No one mod i've done had a huge effect, it's all of them together that add up to a nice overall boost, and for me the iridiums were part of that.

That said, i want to try the original plugs again when i get the time and inspiration because i want to see if the benfit of the iridiums is still there or if the wear eliminates the slight edge they have over the stock ones. And if not it's at least a chance to refresh my memory about the difference. I'll report on it when i try, tho don't hold yer breath....haven't been able to ride or do much of anything bike related lately.

My buddy the spark plug engineer at Champion says that the onlyl difference between iridium and normal plugs is lifespan. I'd be interested in seeing something objective, say, from a dyno.

The Iridiums should cost about 8$ each, that's what I paid. There's an Iridium thread 1 or 2 pages back.

There was an interesting little chart on the nology website that I saw while I was trying to do a little part research on the nology profire ignition coils that Brent had just started to offer. This chart represented electrical connectivity values of various metals used in spark plugs. Long story short, copper, like in the factory NGK's had a better response than did platinum or iridium plugs, then again Nology may have just been trying to pad their marketing scheme for the silver spark plugs. Too bad they don't make those for the Triumph Air-cooleds! :hammer:
