I saw a great post with pictures etc. that showed pulling the tank, battery, shifting back the airbox......etc. pulling the carbs rotating the carbs and changing the jets.

Has anyone been succesfull at dropping the bowls and changing the jets without pulling the carbs or is it just that much easier to do the job with everything removed??

Is there anything else I need besides the new jets? Gaskets? o-rings, compounds, sprays or appurtenances, chingaderras or doohickeys of any kind?

I have a unifilter I am adding plus I already bafflectomized.

Thanks,

PCRider

PC,I`ve changed jets and needles, never removed or loosened the carbs. The Allen screw kits make repeated entry much easier,as does a folding inspection mirror.

Sears makes a very small socket wrench (3 tool set) that you can fit a phillips head on. left angle, straight, and right angle. You can remove the bottom screws (hopefully without stripping the heads) with this tool or one similar, and the jetting job can be done. I successfully did it on mine. No gaskets or anything else needed. In my case (05 America) needed "D tool" for pilot adjustment. Should be some pictures on newbonneville.com to show you a diaghragm of the jets (as to which is pilot and which is main) Also on that web site there are jobbers that sell stainless steel hex head screws to replace the phillips head screws that you removed. If you need more information I could look up sears item number and the jobbers web site for you. Just ask. Hope this helps.

I re-jetted without removing carbs. Be sure and hold tube thing that jet is screwed into with 8mm (I think) wrench when unscrewing jet. If you unscrew tube thing, a little brass piece will fall out. Took me almost an hour to fish it out from behind battery, then I didn't know which way it went in. Had to take other side apart and look at it. Next time, a 20 minute job. Rodburner is right-- a mirror helps. Also, lay a rag on top of engine to catch any little screws or jets you drop.

PC, you're gonna have to remove the carbs the first time to get at the jets. I tried it with a variety of short handled screwdrivers but nothing fit in there. You'll probably want to see what your doing the first time anyway. Just remember to replace the screws so you won't have take them all off again - and odds are you WILL be doing it again.

You might want some spray lubricants for the rubber hoses connecting the carbs on both ends but I didn't require any. No rings or gaskets are needed.

Cut off the bottom of a plastic container (juice or water bottle to drain the carbs into. I found the best thing was the bottom of those new plastic coffee cans. Also, I always shut off the gas at the petcock and let the bike idle for a while the last time I ride it before working on the carbs. That will be less mess to drain.

The mixture screw can be a adjusted with a tiny flathead screwdriver but I think it would be much easier with the proper tool - D Tool from NewBonnie

Most importantly: Take Pictures of the operation!

My D-screw doesn't have a slot. Are you talking about wedging a little screwdriver against side of D-head?
I made a D-tool out of a brass sleeve from a 3/8 compression fitting, flattened one side with needle nose pliers.

chingaderras
Can't help with the carb issue but I can tell you one thing based on past experience.
Anything that requires the use of a chingaderra also requires the downing of at least several warm Tacates in the process. :-D

for those that don't know, a chingaderra is Mexican spanish slang for "f**king thing"
While chigaderras can be useful their use is to generally be avoided unless under extreme duress.

I have changed main jets more than 20 times, pilot jets about 6 times and I have never removed the carbs. I did replace the phillips screws with allen screws the first time I changed the jets. A mirror is useful to "see" what you are doing once the bowls are off. I guess there could be a lot less room on the 865cc motor than on my 790cc. I used a quarter inch drive ratchet with a new #2 phillips bit--a lot of upward pressure--to "break" loose the original phillips screws. I did have to do most of the screws on the left carb from the right side.

As far as needles go, I changed one carb while the dyno tech changed the other--we did this at least 10 times without removing or loosing the tank. I would recommend removing the tank the first time you do the needles so you can see what you are dealing with.

I went to Home Depot and got a little right angle ratcheting screwdriver(w/5 bits including 1/4" socket drive) for 15 $.Made it easy with out removing the carbs.Get the inside screws from the other side of the bike so you can see what youre doing(esp the left inside).Good luck :hammer: For removing and shimming the needles use some bent hemostats.Use a dumaflitchy wrench on the framaslam pin and hope the pinche chingas works. :-D :hammer: :hammer:
