Old guys come up to me all the time and talk about what they had. The year, color and what mods they did to it. It almost always ends with the 'ol bag' made me sell it or 'I had kids and my fun ended'. Some of the guys look really distraught about it too, almost pissed
I have a Ducati Streetfighter S and the only people that seem to love it are kids and cops. Seems to attract attention and trouble, and it's always expensive either way.
I bought my Bonnie and one day my dad started telling me stories about how he and his buddy used to race their Triumph (dads) and a BSA(buddys) tearing up the streets. I never knew any of this until I rolled that Triumph into work one day.

I've always tried to keep a low profile. It's difficult to do on a Bonneville, even a black one.
And it's damn near impossible now that I've had it painted orange!

In the past few years I've owned several bikes including an H-D Softail Custom, GSXR600, Triumph S3, & currently my MV and of course my T100. Though my dad was really a Harley guy (though he did own a '69 Honda CB750 back in the day that he loved http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1969-honda-cb750.htm) but the bike that seemed to get him the most excited was my T100. He was in a fairly advanced state of dementia & the newer bikes, though he would always say, "That's some machine there" were extremely foreign to him. The Bonnie, no doubt, brought back memories for him, though he never owned one, many of his old riding buddies did. He would always say, "I shoulda never got rid of my Harley (a '68 Electraglide that is still being ridden) we could go riding together!" I'd say, "Dad, you can barely walk, let alone ride." He's say, "Ah bullsh1t, I can still ride!" He passed away this past November, he was 82. It still hurts when I go over to my parents house, half expecting him to be puttering around in his garage/driveway. I'm just glad to know that my Bonnie brought back good memories for him.
Cheers,
Glenn

Great that even at the end your bike gave you a common ground to communicate. In 1974 when I bought my honda CB 450 twin, my dad got the itch at 46 y/o and bought his first bike. He rode it to work and tooled around on it. He sold it after his health declined. As the effects of asbestos and cigarettes robbed him of his strength and mobility, he would still occasionallly mention he wished he could go riding again. The memory of being in the wind never dies, and I smile when I'm riding knowing he's watching me enjoy what he never could again.

Good story
My barber says he's had every style Harley they make; he's pushing 80 years old. He always walks out to hear me pull away with my Dominators because he loves the sound.

I ride with my dad often and he has a rather nicely restored 1990 Yamaha FJ1200 that he rescued and babies. I have my Bonnie which has little done to it and is usually in some state of dirty because my lack of a garage or carport. BUT, a good 90% of the time when we are out together I will get the thumbs up, complements, and interest on the "Old" bike. More than once I have had people come up and compliment me for getting an old '70s era bike to run so well. I just forget to tell them its really an '04.

Glenn,
Thank you for your post. It brought back great memories of my Father who would ride nothing but an Indian. I have spent allot of rear seat time on the back of a Chief as a kid, we even managed a way tie on fishing poles on hot summer outings. He too suffered from dementia toward the last except for the last two hours I spent with him in the emergency room before he passed, and of course we talked about motorcycles. May they both rest in peace........
