Mud/Sand Tires
Tourances/Anakees are really 90/10 tires (road/off-road), styled for an off-road look and indeed marginally better than a straight road tire when taken off-road. Right? These are not going to be a marked improvement in mud/sand conditions. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Next step I can find is the Continental TKC80's which is more of a 50/50 tire, and apparently a fine choice if you're going to spend the day in mud bogs or the Sahara desert on one of our twins. Anyone have experience with these? How horrible are they at highway speeds, and cornering on pavement?
I'm going to switch to the Tourances for day-to-day riding. But if I'm going to dedicate a week to fire trail/ATV trail riding I'm considering spooning on something different for the duration. I've been caught in the mud with absolutely no grip a couple times now, and want to avoid that. I'm not going to be out there looking for mud pits to play in, but when confronted with a crossing or an especially rough stretch I want to traverse it without too much drama. But, I'll be on pavement a lot too and don't want that time to be miserable.
Avon Gripsters are more a 60/40 tire that look like a good alternative, but they aren't made in a size to fit our bikes.
Any other suggestions for decent mud/sand tires for the Bonnie/Scrambler?

Can't remember what it is, but I seem to remember that the ADV crowd was really loving a relatively uncommon brand of tire for 50/50 riding. If you read ADVrider, you'll find lots of people talk about them. I think the two Canadian girls who did Alaska on Tigers XCs ran them and said they could have done the whole trip on one set.
Chen Shing maybe? I don't have time to look it up this morning.

Got Heidenau tires on the Scrambler. They are as sweet as the Pirelli M60s I have on the DRZ and come in 19"

I found them: Heidenau K60 Scouts, that what you are talking about z? Not so knobby like the TKC80s but much more aggressive tread than 90/10s, kinda like the gripsters. That could be the ticket ...
Is that what spadoman had on there when you got his scrammy, Mary?

I'm on my second set of TKC80s on my scrambler and love them. Even on the scrambler you'll scrape pegs well before the tires get squirrely in corners. No noticeable problems at highway speed either. Great tire.

Yes BB! Those were what Spadoman put on her, was considerring getting something similar on my Bonnie prior to 'the incident.' They are awesome, really comparable to the M60s, which really transformed the DRZ into a goat. They are also super long wearing not-knobbies as they are doing a great job with the hack.

Well I know Joe could sail through the curves on those things, I couldn't keep up with him when it was just the two of us. So I expect they'd be good enough for me. Now I'm thinking about skipping the Tourances all together and just put these on for day-to-day too.
Busy day dreaming of those fire roads, don't ya know. I'm into full dreaming-about-spring mode now.

Ditto. Hope to be able to join you on an ADV or two this year now that I'm ambulatory again! (fingers crossed, as there's still the possibility of an ice-riding incident before spring)

If you don't make it through the winter, we're replacing "possibility" with "probability" for now on.
Some of those ADV guys hit it hard and go looking for trouble. One day if I have the appropriate bike I may try and work up to that too. For now, I'm just always looking for the path less traveled and picking my way down it. I think I'm just a sightseer at heart more than an adrenaline junky.

Yessir, the Heidenau's are the ones to have for 50/50. I have been in places I really shouldn't have been with Tourances and they have yet to let me down. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
