Extra Motorcycle: dya mean the one outside?
It seems to me that the cold weather here has some sort of shrinking effect on the shocks on my bike. Every January the bike seems to sit lower than it did the previous December. I've also noticed this happening to the buckle on my belts.
This is obviously due to the fact that metal expands with heat of summer and shrinks when cold in the winter.
Alternately, my wife has a theory that this has something to do with my having been "in the Nile" and, as I've been agonising over this for so long now, I think she's going to call a priest saying I "need exorcised" - but I haven't been to Egypt in years and I certainly don't feel possessed.

These have been some of the most informative, well thought out, and articulated posts I have read in quite some time.

To FattRat, thanks for your integrity, and saving me time & money.

To ChuckofTahoe, thanks for validating Fattrat’s premise and my own thoughts that I have had for some time now.

If I ever get this Thruxton of mine on the West Coast I’d love to ride with these two.

Hey Pat next time you are going to be in San Jose send me a message. I'm around, the coffee is free, and we don't have to talk about weight watchers unless you really want to.

BTW I am NOT an aggressive rider. I am what they call a pvssy...but I'm still here.

Thanks for those posts, Pat and Chuck. That sound like great advice and I'm gonna take it.

I'm shedding some pounds too so I'm not concerning myself with the nuances o my suspension until I get in range of my goal weight.

It happens that in my city, the road surface is extremely poor in some parts of town, so you need suspension that is a lot softer than I would like
You might find the progressive 440's to be a good shock for you in this case. They have a patented system that opens a valve when it senses rough surfaces and allows oil to flow faster creating a softer setting. then when the surface is normal the valve closes making for a stiffer feel. Seems to work. I don't ride many rough areas, but theres one stretch near my home about a couple hundred yards long of surface thats almost like whoop de doos. When i ride over it i feel the roughness at the first few bumps then it seems to start floating over them. Yet i have them set fairly stiff. Made really well too.

Like Pat, I thought the BMW suspension was the best. Although I have read many postings concerning how bad the stock suspension on the Bonneville is, I have not found this to be the case with my bike. I'm 5'11'' and weigh 180 lbs. I ride hard and fast and love taking the corners and curves and putting a real lean on the bike. No problems that I can discern with the suspension. Based upon my riding style and preferences, I doubt that I will be changing it. I might consider it if I decide to race at Daytona this year!!! Great posting!!! Joe :-D

Pat.
If you can get BBC2 on satelite then you should try to catch a programme called "The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook" by Simon King and Dave Myers.
I've just been watching them cross the trans-Kalahari highway on a pair of trail bikes and stopping off to knock up a crocodile sate with zebra burgers (commenting that they were the first burgers they'd had in ages that weren't made of "eyebrows, ears and arseholes").
*Recommended viewing* :-D

Yo boozefighter......

I remember complaining how "soft" the front-end was on my Bonnie', the suspension Guru I was talking to suggested that I should try to put my rear shocks on THEIR softest settings too. Well, I weigh in at 240+.... so I had the shocks firmed up, but I thought I'd try them soft as suggested.

Bone stock suspension, shocks at their softest, and the bike was an absolute HOOT to throw around through some 35-55 mph canyon carving!

Then I had to go and read everybody's thoughts, feelings, impressions, wisdom, and........

on the various motorcycle sites.

Live & learn (I hope).
