I just don't get the side car thing. My opinion.. they are hidious looking. They also take the fun out of motorcycling. A complete waste of $.

Just my opinion..

I traded a Concours14 for the Bonneville because I wanted to put a sidecar on for my daughter so we could do rides and road trips as a family. Now that I have the bike I am rethinking this idea,
I have another m/c so I wouldn't miss being able to have 2 wheels for riding but the ride on the Bonneville is better than my Transalp for riding around.
Since I've always wanted a Jeep and we could go many different places in a Jeep and enjoy the sun and wind in shorts, kinda like motorcycling with not being cocooned. If I get the Jeep it will be no sidecar and I can't keep the Bonneville and then get a Ural and have the TA.

Anybody want to buy my Transalp so I could have room for a Ural?

So I decided to ask for opinions from you fine ladies and gentlemen. I have found a couple of Jeeps that are good prices and not bad shape but I still have the hankering for a hack because they are truly cooler than a Jeep but the Jeep seems to have more(not much) practicality.

get yourself a Jeep Wrangler, TJ model being the best ie '96 to '06. the last of the "real Jeeps" with the AMC inline six

I have one, they go anywhere and are just as much fun to have as a Bonnie

a great combination Jeep Wrangler and Triumph Bonneville
the only down side, both are highly addictive and you will be spending a lot of time modding, upgrading etc etc

Jeep.

I can't imagine not having one in the family (we're on our fifth one now since '93, all trouble free).

If you've always been fascinated by the idea of a sidecar, go for it! They are like nothing else in the world BUT they are physically demanding to ride through twisties and really sensitive to setup and road camber. I have an old Velorex car on a Scrambler and can mount/ dismount in a matter of minutes. If I drop the mounts and subframe too, probably about an hour. I'm not sure you would want more rake as that increases steering effort, less would make it easier to steer. Disclaimer: I am not sure of that, it is just my opinion based on my own rig.

Get a Jeep!

As it happens, I know this guy in AZ who is thinking about selling his
'04 Wrangler.

Seems it just sits all the time 'cuz he can ride a bike year-round.

Just sayin'

What are folks thoughts on the Urals?

I am thinking of getting one to cart the kids around the neighborhood.

I have a Jeep. I love it! That being said, I really want a Ural too!

A blast to buzz around on. Mine was an older 650 cc, so top speed was around 50 and that was downhill with a backwind. It was also kick start. This bike was, as the legend has it, 1938 technology. Everything was basic and somewhat primative. I had it all apart at different stages, except for the crankcase. Very simple and fun tinkering.

Everyone who took a ride said it was like an amusement park ride. I never had to look for passengers. My kids were younger then and I couldn't keep them out of the thing.

I'd definitely buy another, but it would have to be a newer model with the 750 with a little more power and some of the newer refinements. And, (and this is huge,) better brakes. That's the only thing that scared me about the bike. Small, antique drum brakes with very weak stopping power.
