Black Bonneville - Putting on the stainless hex screws to replace the pot metal Phillips. 1st problem is that the left inside back screw is not coming out and may be slightly stripped. I think I may need to remove the carburetors to get this sucker out. Any trick to removing the large rubber intake hoses? Seems to be the worst part. Problem #2 - I removed the bottom of the float bowl to see how the jets are located. Removed the main jet to see how difficult. Reassembled and now get a slight popping when the engine is idling or backs off. I am thinking that maybe the jet holder may have backed out a bit. Should this be tightened first and then the jet? Do I attack or punt it to a real mechanic. Thanks.

That screw got me too. I ended up using a vise grips to loosen it--what a pain. There are several other methods I've seen posted here. One was to cut a new slot in the head--can't remember the others.

I made sure the jet holder was tight before tightening the jet.

Check out this website for some useful tips:

Good luck!

I had no intentions (or know how) when I removed my carbs....but the stupid stock carb screws forced me to do it.

pull em......

I had to use vice grips on a couple of the screws.....

For the couplers.....silicone spray....it softens up the rubber.

Sounds like you may have bent the float tang and changed the fuel level in the bowl.

Removing the crabs is really pretty easy. Remove seat and tank first. Loosen the clamps attaching the carbs to the rubber aintake manifolds. Disconnec the two wires to each carb. Remove the screws holding the battery box/air cleaner assembly in place, and slide it towards the rear of the bike - you should be able to move it one-hlaf inch without any difficulty. This will give you the space you need to wiggle the carbs free,. There is no need to disconnect the throttle linkage. Replace the soft brass screws and reassemble. Take your time and don't force anything. The entire process should not take more than 30 minutes.

Anchor,
I posted a reply over on the NTBF.. all the responses here are good info, especially T1's comment about possibly bending the float tang and changing the float level.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I do believe that bending the tab a fraction might have been possible so I will work on that. As far as the screw goes I will try the suggestions and keep my fingers crossed.
