Has anyone swapped out their Scrambler headlight for a brighter one? If so, please give me details.

I've noticed my SMQ Bonnie does not light up as well as I would like. The beam does not extend out very far from the front tire.

Tried the high beam, but that is too bright.

I tried one of the PIAA ultra-bright lamps first and was disappointed. Ended up installing an Osram lamp from Daniel Stern lighting after someone here recommended him and it is better, but far from perfect. It has a big dead area directly in front of the bike. The lense on the headlight is the culprit but I have not found a solution other than go with a larger 7" light from a Bonneville.




I had hoped that Triumph would address the problem in later Scramblers but I guess they dont ride at night in England?

Does the SMQ have the Scrambler headlight? Some people have reported success swapping to a sealed beam. Seems wrong to me. As for Daniel Stern, I liked him in City Slickers and the voice over in The Wonder Years. The website has lots of info but I get no response to my emails. I am thinking of adding some LED spot lights. Lots of light, low current draw and you can aim them where you want. The ones on display at the IMS show were between $200 and $400 a set. Maybe Santa will be nice even though I wasn't.

Direct-wiring your headlight to the battery with a 30 (I think) amp relay and some decent-gauge wire, using the stock wiring to flip said relay works quite well to brighten things.

Other than that, there are sadly few options for the 5.5" headlight crowd. =/

You could install an HID rig, too (which also accomplishes, or should, the above.) Some D-H4R or D4R with an H4 base should work fine. They just need to be 'R' so they're shielded to work properly with a reflector housing, rather than a projector housing.

If you do want to go with LED auxiliary (driving/fog) lights, you could look here. These are pretty inexpensive, and really put out a hell of a lot of light:

Valeo (Cibie) do a 5.75" reflector, but I can't give you a nod as to how good or otherwise it is - I swapped my headlight for a 7" Emgo jobbie. This looks like the bit you want:

seen on forum easternbeaver.com has a plug + play relay that with an upgraded bulb, most say the lens-reflector is the major issue

I bought a used T100 Bonneville headlight (complete) from a breakers yard that advertised on eBay. I also bought some new T100 fork shrouds / headlamp brackets as the Scrambler brackets are shaped for the smaller headlamp shell and didn't fit the bigger headlamp shell 'nicely'. It is significantly better than the standard Scrambler headlight, but could still be better. (I have a Cibie 'Z' beam unit in my T140 and that is superb). The T100 headlight brackets also enabled me to re-locate the ignition switch so that it didn't rub on the wiring bundle.

The lens patterning is really annoying. =( But the relay and bulb improvements do help a substantial margin.

So I followed the link to the Cibie light but I'm afraid a UK supplier would have the wrong light pattern for the US. The French supplier was way more $$. Anyone know if there is a US supplier of the 5 3/4" Cibie headlight?
