The bottom channel on that 71 later tanks looks almost like it would go over the new frame?? Anybody ever try this and can you fit one without cutting the underside of the tank???

I found on my old Triumph the water would leak into the carbs, I would remove that screw on the bottom of the carb bowl (plastic cap, gold colored) and drain the water out; start right up after that. Found that out after washing the bike. I could never get it started and then i noticed the carb cables have no seals into the top of those amal carbs...LOL.

I had the tank off my T120 today. Remembered this thread so checked it out against the Thruxton frame to see how close it would fit.

The channel in the 1971+ OIF tank is wide enough to clear the newer bikes spine but it would require cutting the 2 rubber covered tank attachment points (the two prongs on the spine that hold the front of the tank) on the Hinkley frame as they are wider than the OIF tank channel.

I have attached some photos showing what is going on and comparing the older and newer tanks.

It won't immediately fit but on a quick look I think it could be done without too much drama.

You will need to cut those tank holders. Probably also will need to weld on a vertical bolt up from the spine as the old tank is held by a vertical bolt that goes through the middle of the tank.

I don't think it wouldn't be a major drama to make it fit but if you didn't like it - then you'd have to cut off the added vertical attachment and re-weld some bits onto the tank holders to make them hold the proper tank again.

Some photos showing the relative sizes of the 2 tanks. NB when considering the relative sizes, my Thruxton is a 2006 carbed model and so it is smaller than the more recent fuel injected tanks.





Personally I think the OIF tank would look too small on the bike but that is my taste.

Awesome, good job, the most or best explanation on this subject ever. Thanks much. I think you are right about the tank from the older Triumph being too small for this bike. This bike is built wider then the old one and I think that old style tank would get swallowed up somehow by this wider engine.

All of this tank swapping conversation might help answer a question for me. I understand the modern bikes have a different tank for carbs and EFI but do they otherwise swap straight across? In other words is an EFI tank the same for an EFI Bonnie/Thruxton/Scrambler?

so yeah, the channel is indeed big enough, I cut my front mounts down a bit. the next problem you would face is the high tubes of the front mounting of the engine, thats where my t150 tank got stuck. Its possible a t120 tank won't have this issue because its smaller than the tank I have. If you look at the channel of the new bonneville tank, youll notice in the lower front its been widened more.
