Hmmm....Kawasaki W650

So this neighbor of mine has one in his garage. It's a 2000 with 7015 miles. We fired it up and it sounded a bit rough. He said it just needs the carbs and jets cleaned out which he was going to do anyway. He already put in a new battery and will change out the oil. There's zero rust on the thing and it really just needs a good wash or something to get all the dust off.

He doesn't have time to ride it plus he has some health issues. I just asked him if he ever thought about selling it. He said he's about 90% sure he'll sell it very soon. I told him I maybe 90% interested.

Should I?! I've been doing some research on it and it seems very cool. My only apprehension is the availability of parts for something that was only sold here in the states for 2 years.

Then I found this thread:

(just a representation of the W650 for sale as the one my neighbor has is the same color)

Sweet kick starter.

Not sure if the Bonnie I'm looking at will be go (price). However, this maybe in the cards.

Thoughts?

My thought is you're a brave man bringing that here!

Other than that, you like it, got the money, buy it.

If you can get it for any reasonable price I would buy it. They are great bikes. I had one for a while before I got the Bonneville and I still miss it. I wouldn't worry about parts. The only sold them in the States for 2 years but they sold them worldwide for about 12 years untile the W800 was released.

Here is a thread where I had both bikes together for a while and compared the bikes side by side complete with pictures.

I like them. I think I'd be more interested in a W650 if the new Bonnevilles didn't exist.

Just a thought. They have their own forum, why not ask them?

I saw that... very strange. Obviously not a very active owner base! That said, have a look here: http://thelonelyones.forumcircle.com/viewforum.php?f=45

Unfortunately as Kawasaki South Africa are the official importers for Triumph, we never see the W650 or W800 over here. Sacrilege I know, or maybe even punishable by firing squad on here, but personally, I fancy one of those engines with the shaft drive to the overhead camshaft!

Here is a good review of the W800 by Kevin Ash -- although I think his Power rating of 70bhp (71PS), 52kW @ n/a rpm is a way bit off!
