FWIW, I'm always scrupulous about not allowing the gas nozzle to make any contact with the cap or filler neck other than lightly, at the very bottom. Even that is mostly just to avoid static.

You're right, it's a mess, I'm not sure how it happened, I'm always very careful while pumping gas ... anyway, your project bike looks fantastic, can't wait to see it finished ,good luck ...

Thanks, very kind of you to say. I've been extremely lax in updating the blog, but the '69 should be done pretty soon. A month or so? Hopefully...

I'm so anal that I've never allowed a pump nozzle to contact the tank. The theory above seems correct: gasoline eats away at the primer, leaving nothing for the tank's lining to adhere to. All it seems to take to start the process is a single tiny scratch. I hope that the fuel filter screen continues to do its job!

+1 on the NB Monza, its just cool, plain and simple, plus you can never loose your cap that you set on the top of the pump before fueling and then forgot where you put it, making yourself look like a tool trying to find said cap for a good 5 minutes. The previous has never happened to me, ever.

I have the bellacourse monza cap. It really helps with the paint peeling. By the fuel cap area. If I had to do it over again I would get the chrome one as my aluminum cap is always showing signs of corrosion and staining unless I buff it out on a weekly basis.

Hinged cap
I came across this Joker Machine cap at the IMS in Long Beach, it also come's in chrome and one other style, it looks well made, it's not cheap at $200, has anyone bought one yet, wondering how it compare's to a UK made monza cap?

Take a look at Dime city's caps. I ran across theirs last night, their adapter and Monza
cap may fit the bill, and seems a good price.
