Props to local shop
To preface, I am not a mechanic or even know what I am doing... but I have been wanting to learn for a long time and have lacked even basic language to find resources. Essentially what I have wanted is to be able to go into a shop while they are working on my bike and just have them show me what is up. In absence of that, somewhere that I could tinker but know that there was someone who knew stuff that could help me out.
That's when barnabaas (speed triple guy) found this local shop, and we went down there to check it out:
http://www.bayareamotoshop.com/
A really nice guy runs the place which is essentially a bunch of lifts, tools and some people to help you learn about your bike. They also have a number of classes and hands on workshops. I took one the other week about chains and sprockets, and learned much more than I thought I would about those parts.
I am looking forward to getting into my carbs and understanding how my bike breathes, but never felt comfortable just doing it in my garage with no understanding of anything. Particularly fearing the fallout from my wife having to park outside because the garage is covered in bike parts. Actually, I am looking forward to take a whole bunch of the classes, just to begin to keep up with the language used on this site...
Anyway, hope that helps someone else who wants to learn but doesn't feel comfortable just ripping his/her bike apart.

I suppose I should have mentioned in the title that it is in the SF bay area, California. Great idea particularly for a place where garages in homes are rare.

Always good to hear a positive experience like this. Nice one.

What a fantastic place to have nearby. I'd kill for a joint like that near me. Okay, I'm exaggerating. But man, it'd be a great place to hang out. Thanks for posting...

I agree. It almost makes me want to move to the Bay area despite the hills & traffic woes.

We had a place like that. Unfortunately they went out of business...

Having lived in SF with no garage this would have been useful. I hope he has a system to account for his tools after each job

Yeah, I think he is trying it out and hoping for the best. I hope good people use it and help him stay afloat rather than abuse it and take advantage of a great resource.

I've seen a guy start something similar, but he's on a nice government pension with his house paid off.
Someone who needs to work full time with a house payment probably won't survive too long.
