I've changed mine twice so far - once at about 250, then again just before stopping for the winter. Man, what a surprise the first time! The second time I knew what to expect, but some still got onto the asphalt.

Does anyone have a good trick to intercept that shooting stream of hot oil? It goes almost to the tire if you don't put something there to catch it.

All you do is situate the pan so that one end of it is under the hole. mabe just enough so that if the oil was to fal STRAIGHT down it would go in the pan about 2" from the edge. then the major portion of the pans is going out towards the direction of the oil when it shoots out. That way the oil will go in the pan even if it shoots a foot outwads.

oil shoots in >>>>this direction>>>

Yeah, I did that the second time! Maybe I just need a bigger pan... I guess I should search one out...

I have a large plastic pan and it is very deep. Don't buy one that is part catcher and part container, their a little to shallow.

I go to Kragen auto parts. they just let you go into the back room and dump it in this huge tank. It's free. Most auto parts stores allow this here in Ca. Probably in all or most states i'd imagine.

NAPA lets you dump the oil for free if you buy it from them in McKinney, tx. Hell Mart also has an oil container you can dump your leftover oil in as well. I prefer NAPA because the lines are MUCH shorter than Hell Mart--especially this time of year.

Ridge,

I bring used oil (as well as paint and stuff) to the hazardous waste drop off at Western disposal. I think it's free for all of Boulder county. Scroll to the bottom here.

Besides what everyone here said, tt would also be wise to put a large newspaper under the pan. Youre always gonna have some drips when dealing with pans.
