My 04 black bonnie is in for her 40,000km service, I just received a phone call from my dealer saying the bearings were pitted and required replacing, cost, Triumph genuine parts $92 AUD non-genuine $62. I'm also putting on sprockets and chain, my bill so far is $800+ must keep this from the missus.
Is the bearing wear normal and would it come under warranty? :???:

I don't know what the bonnie has stock, but see if you can get tapered steering bearings installed, they would be better. and I don't know if they would be covered under warrenty, might just be a normal wear item like tires and not covered under warrenty

You should expect some improved steering (smoother) at low speeds after replacing the bearings. I replaced the steering head bearings on a 99 DR 650 at 35,000 miles and my damage appeared to be from moisture, just like what your dealer described. Stock bearings on the Suzuki were tapered roller, I would expect the same on the Triumph. I did check and and adjust the tension on the Bonneville steering head at 14000. I ride an 01 so its been on the road about 4 years. I hope to get around to repacking mine before they get too nasty. The maintenance sheet recommends 12000 miles or two years. So I 'm late but ......

Good luck with keeping the $$ a secret.

Back when I had my antique Beemer, I also had to replace my steering head bearings (the originals were still in after 40 years...the grease was like contact cement). Since really old BMW parts are a bit difficult to come by, I started looking at cross reference charts for bearings. Believe it or not, there were numerous sources for, not only the head bearings, but the wheel bearings and others on the bike. A little research may save more than just a few dollars...
