Just installed my FREAK :-D :-D WEEEEE..HOOOO
Man, I can't believe the difference. I was running a little lean before 120's/45's/Stock needles & 2.5turns out with the snorkle in.

Here's my setup now:

D&D's
FREAK
160's / 42's / 2.5 turns out
Thunderbird needles with 3 shims

No flat spots, midrange pulls strong thru all revs, and WOT continues to pull very well... It's 45 degrees here today, so I'll have to adjust for warmer weather, but not for a few months.

I have a mild "popping" on decel, but not nearly what is was before. Haven't checked the plugs yet, but the first 35 miles with the Freak is giving me that SHEET EAT'N GRIN!!!!
Thanks, New Bonneville!!

My Bike 1
My Bike 2
My Bike 3

Now I need to find a Dyno in Charlotte

I'm surprised you need that many shims with those needles, but glad you like it!

I was using TBS needles for a while too, and i also had them shimmed to the hilt. The reason is that they are longer than the stock needles but tapered more. So if you don't shim them the diameter of the needle at any given point in the jet is actually thicker than stock needles because they are so long, even tho they are tapered more. So shimming them with about 3 shims leave you with the same length as the stock ones but a thinner taper so you get richer than stock. otherwise you actually go backwards because of the length and it gets leaner instead of richer. i then went to thrux needles which are about the same length as stock but even more tapered than either those or the TBS. So with no shims they are almost like the TBS with 3 shims but a bit more tapered and a bit richer.

My Thuxton needles won't be in until next week. I plan to give them a shot and see which works better for me.

Daz, did you put a shim in the Truxton needles when you put them in?

yes, 2 of them and it was wayyyyy too rich so i went with no shims. In fact i think it's still a bit rich and i want to open up the restrictor to balance that out but afraid to cut on it. (molded restrictor, not removable like on many other years/models of the twin)

dardoonk,
You could try another couple of shims and see what it does.
I think the Thruxton needles will be the go.
You will probably only need 145s or 150 with the Thruxton needles.
