Well team, I finally got the Speedy onto a Dyno and am a little dissapointed in the result on paper. I expected to see some tangible proof that my bike was better than stock but alas not.

After spending $1400 on exhaust and intake mods (haven't got the FARK yet but that was next), I expected to see an improvement in HP or Torque, but here goes, after 2 hours of Dyno tuning this is it:

Run 7 (final)
Max Std. Torque 52.1 ft-lbs @ 4250 RPM
Max Std Horses 53.9

I gotta say the bike does still feel great and very quick acceleration. But it seems that the butt dyno is not the tool for spruiking on improvements in horsepower....

Still love the bike, may stop spending on it.........

Please post your mod's Binnsy. You have gone up not down. The book says torque is 60NM at 3500 which is about 44 ft lbs and HP is 62PS at 7400 which is 59.18HP . Converted your putting out 71NM at 4250 for torque.
I'm not completely sure but it looks like HP dropped to about 56.5 but at what rpm was it?

Bryan,

Mods to date
Madaz pipes (sound awesome)
Rejetted to 130 mains, can't remember the type?
Intake snork removed, airbox opening enlarged to match opening on filter.
Home made velocity stack fastened to airbox cover.

Maximum HP 53.9 achieved at 7500 RPM

HP charted over 50 from 5500 through to 8000 RPM when the rev limiter kicked in.

Torque charted over 50 ft-lbs from 3000 through to 5000 RPM

Maximum achieved at 4000 RPM was 52.1 ft-lbs.

It definitely feels more potent and the Dyno figures indicate an 11% improvement from their first run, which I guess means it was running poorly when I took it in :???:

I gave it a nudge yesterday and it got up to 160kph fairly quickly, any more was a bit of a struggle which suits my style of riding. I like to take off in a hurry (preferably leaving some rubber on the road) and then settling down to cruise..

Regards ...........Binnsy

Binnsy,
Thats about the hp (54.96 first dyno) that I got with Staintunes and UNI Filter + 115 mains +Thruxton needles. Your torque is a bit higher but I had 18th sprocket.
The second dyno with NARK 63hp. with 150 mains. Dropping from 155 to 150 made 1 hp more and a drop from 150 to 145 would probably have made 1 more as it was still rich up top. It gets to about 4000 rpm and takes off even in top. I have the 17 th sprocket back on and have ordered a 16. Just for fun.

What was the F/A trace like?

Bryan the hp/torque figures you are quoting are crank figures not rear wheel figures allow 13 to 13 hp difference.

I have only got 2 words for you Binnsy "get a FREAK"

Cheers
Darcy :chug:

From all accounts of the tests I read about over on ba.com by Thunderbike in New Zealand, the 865 Speedmasters could really benefit from a new cam. Anything done up to that point won't get you much.

I just posted a reply about the freak to Larry a minute ago. I mentioned only one person with an 05' 865 speedy has ever answered me on what it did for thier bike and he said it did a lot. But as i told Larry, for all i know he may have gone right from stock bike to pipes and freak and then the difference WOULD have seemed pretty big. Tpipes and air mods/jetting got me a pretty good boost. but the freak from all i've heard is huge. It's said tho that the 865 speedy as Sal said isn't responsive to big intake/mixture changes due to the cam. On the other hand, most of this idea has be propogated by the thunderbike crew who post at BA regularly. And i'm unsure whether to believe them because they told me no intake mods would help at all, then they tried pulling the snorkel after i kept telling them how much of a diff it made and they tried it and were shocked to find it dyno'd at 2 RWHP more. That and the fact that i've created considerable intake increases and jetted for them and gotten quite a bit of a boost.

So the point is that the 05' SM does respond to air mods, but the question is will the freak not be beneficial because it opens the intake up much more than the airbox mods we do and the engine can't benefit past the airbox mods? In other words, for this engine is the freak overkill as to the amount of increase in the intake? This is what has kept me from buying one. But if i knew i'd reap another 5 RWHP or more i'd be at newspeedmaster.com with my card out right now !

Binnsy and Daz,
One of you has to take a bullet for the team and be the guinea pig.
The guy that dynoed my bike was gob smacked that dicing the airbox would give 8 hp.
My theory is that pipes and jetting give a certain amount of increase due to the fact that the pipes are more restrictive than the air box.
When the pipes are opened up the air box becomes the most restrictive part.
When the airbox is removed to get any more air in you need bigger headers/pipes or carbs or cams.
I must say that prior to NARK I considered a big bore but for hp/$ I don't think it would get near the NARK.

Binnsy I think you did pretty well for the mods you've made. Sorry about the mistake on the rear wheel thing but that would make your figures even better. I wouldn't be discouraged about an 11% increase at all. You still have room to improve and what the heck it's only money.
DickBender will the Freak make much of a difference on the dyno compared to what 's already been done? :chug:
