I chased an oil leak down to my transmission cover. I changed the gasket but trying to bolt everything back up I found a bolt that screws in only so far before just turning like its stripped. Turns out it still leaks too.

What are the odds that if I run the appropriate sized tap in the hole I can rethread it? Or am I looking at a drill and helicoil? Anyone know the spec of bolt on the transmission and side covers?

Just trying to figure out if I need to go to hardware store, or bike shop

those bolts take very little torque, like 9nm. i found out like u the hard way, but luckily for me the bolt snapped before it stripped.

try a "roll tap"they're made for soft materials such as aluminum.they don't cut the threads(the tap has no flutes),they form the threads by displacing or pushing the material.they also produce stronger threads than conventional taps.

Thanks, I 'll look into the roll taps. But this is shaping up to be a job for the bike shop.
