I don't mind the stock rear signals, but I think they stick out too far. I was thinking about shortening the stalk to bring them in a little closer to the taillight.
I tried to loosen the nut behind the license plate, but I can't turn it. I can only hold it in place because there's no room to rotate the wrench. I'm afraid to twist on the signal itself while securing the nut.

How do I remove the rear turn signals??

I'm not familiar with the BA taillight assembly, but taillights/turnsignals are a relativly inexpensie upgrade. Might be woth the $$ to avaiod an unsightly cut, glue/rethread...

I asked the same question in an earlier post but didn't get any response.

Feeling dejected I abandoned the project, (not in a hurry to do it anyway).

However, in my first attempt to remove the lock nuts I cut a piece out of a cheap ring spanner to get it on the nut. This worked OK but the threads must have locktite or similar on them and I gave up as It felt like something was about to break.

I am good at effing up jobs like this so backed off for the time being. Let me know how you fare and I might be tempted to give it another shot.

Good luck..........Binnsy :-D

I have used a box wrench on the nut inside the license plate bracket. It is locktited. I cut the stalk off to the desired length in a lathe and then drill and tap the cut off end with a 14mm tap, install a 14mm stud and drill the stud out to allow the wires to pass thru...works great.

I described how I did this last week, search the forum. It is easy if you have a hacksaw, drill press, 11/32" drill and 10mm tap. I bought the tap at the local hardware.

Just grab the turn signal and turn it a bit so you can get a regular open end wrench on it. It will only take a fraction of a turn to loosen it until it can turn by hand. Disconnect and pull all the wires free.

Cut off the turned down threaded stud that goes into the plate mount. Save it.

Cut off 1-2" from the stalk (I cut 2", the maximum). Drill out the cut end about a half inch deep with a 11/32" drill.

Tap the hole and with locktite screw in the stud that you previously cut off and saved.

Thread the wires back through and reassemble with locktite.

This technique works because the turned down stud on the license plate end is twice as long as need be. There is enough length to cut it off then reinsert it into a new threaed hole after shortening the turn signal stalk.

This took me an hour or two. Do not scratch your chrome, cover it with masking tape. This is a simple job for one who is experienced in the shop but would be a challenge for a newbie.
