Just got in from changing the oil on my wifes 2001 Bonnie and my Speed Four. Then it hit me-

I used Motul 15W50 (same stuff for the SF), but when I was cleaning the garage afterward, I looked in the Bonnie service manual and It says to use 10W40 :wow: I check the owners manual for my Thurx (the America, Bonnie & Thruxton are the same book, with a Thruxton specific insert) and it says to use either 10W40 OR 15W50. So I'm confused. What are y'all using?

Question two:
I filled it with about 3.25 quarts which brings the oil right between the low and high hash mark on the sight glass. Should I add more? The spec sheet says 1gal...

Thanks!

My Bonnie takes about 3 3/4 qts with a new filter, and uses Mobil Synthetic V-twin 20/50. No problems in any riding temps. My 04 owners manual says no less than 15w/40.

Randy,
I would suggest running the bike for a few minutes, shut it down and after the oil has had a chance to drain into the crank, check the sight window again. With 3 1/4 qts of fresh oil in it, running it is no risk. If after checking the sight glass again it is a bit lower than before, add some more oil, but between the marks is fine - make sure the bike is on level ground when you check it. And using 15W50 is fine. I use Mobil 1 synthetic 15W15 purchased from Walmart and it is just fine for the Bonnie.
Good luck,
Tom

That's interesting. I have an '01 Bonnie as well, and the owner's manual specifies 15W50.

For what it's worth, I run Mobil 1 MX4T 10W40 in the winter (just changed it over this weekend) and Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 in the summer.

Thanks to all who attended!

Do you keep one bullet left for yourself, for when it's all over and done?
