It would ease the pain of getting the shaft! I took my bike in today to our trusty Triumph dealer(where I purchased it) and I was quoted $400 for labor alone for the check up and re-jetting the carbs for my mods...!!I think this is outrageous but how else do I keep my warranty?? :???:
It is now 3 days later .....still no bike..they are still working on it....I think the space shuttle could have been prepped by now..no longer going to this dealer for service..sales and parts are reliable!!!!

You can do all your work yourself and your warranty is fine as long as you use the proper materials....My understanding is that they can't require you to let them do the service unless they do not charge for it. Alternatively, you might be able to find a straight repair shop, not a dealer, that has better rates.....

The 500 mile service is pretty easy, you can do it yourself no problem...I did mine, total cost was about 50 for oil and filter, and an afternoon with my bike and a cold Rolling Rock..... :-D

I remember paying around $250.00 without mods. Wish I had just done it myself.

Copper is right. Under the Moss-Magnunson act, they CANNOT by law require you to go to them.

I get into this same fight with VW all the time over my Jetta, but I just mention Moss-Magnunsun, and they stop hooting and hollering.

Changing your oil is not that hard. If they did everything on the list including the Oil Change, it takes no more than an hour. 1-1/2 hours tops.

$65/hr is the going rate here, so...

$65 x 1.5= $97.50 labor
Oil, $48 MAX (if they use triumph brand stuff)
Filter $12 MAX (Triumph brand again)
HAZMAT Disposal $5

$162.50 HIGH END total (plus local taxes)
Rejetting, should not take more than 1/2 hr (takes me 15 min) so maybe another $40ish for that.

$200ish total. Maybe another $25 if they are dynoing it.

I cannot justify anything over $250 for what they are doing...

My opinion, get the manual, and do basic maintenance yourself. If it needs to be changed now, ask and someone will email you the needed specs/torques to use.

Just make sure your oil meets JASO MA. Mobil 1 V-Twin, Amsoil Motorcycle Oil, and Motul all meet this spec. Most any Synthetic bike oil will, but I know for a fact those oils do. You can get the correct oil filter at AutoZone or your local parts chain for $6ish.

Good luck, and I encourage you to do it yourself. Even buying the manual, tools needed (if you have none) and a drain pan, you will still be $200+ ahead of the game.

I did my own 500 mile check-up following the book that came with the motorcycle as a guide on what the dealer would have checked if I let them do it. The hardest part is changing the oil which really is not hard at all.

Next year I plan on purchasing the manual which is a year before my warranty expires (bike really shouldn't cost me a dime out of pocket for the first 2 years. Everything that breaks should be warrantied, right?!). I have another mode of transportation so if a modification or fix takes a few days so what i'll just take the car.

I have 800 miles on my SM (owned it for 2 1/2 weeks) and just can't imagine anything mechanical breaking that I couldn't eventually fix--with the help of people on this forum and a manual). This forum is a GREAT resource with tons of good information and mechanically geared people (excluding myself).

Did the 400.00 include having sex with his wife for the next 6 months? I understand she usually charges 2 bucks to service the clients. Joe :-D

I brought mine in for the 500 mile thinking I had to keep the warranty in tact. After the dealers so called expert Tech. forgot to put the washer back on the drain plug and I had new oil dripping all over the garage floor!!!! I had a long talk with the General Manager and we came to an understanding, He gave me a gallon of Mobil 1 and a new Triumph filter with a new crush washer for my next oil change. He also said he would personally initial my warranty book when I do the maintenance myself. I now have 1750 miles on the BA and I'm freezing to death waiting for winter to start and stop.
I do my own work on my cages I don't know why I didn't do the 500 mile myself. I guess because this is my first British bike. I bought a shop manual for the America, dealer gave me a RAT discount, paid $80 US. This should save a bunch of money.
Do your own work guys the Triumphs are easier to work on then the Japs.
Time to open a Guinness and watch the Temp. drop!! Baby it's cold outside!! High of 25 degrees F.
